The Polish Army WW2

Post by annie1 » Mon May 12, 2008 8:13 am

Hi All,

I have been reading about the Polish Army for the last week, and still cant get the answers I need, my main one is, who held the records for these men, while they were over here :?:
I did find a few good sites, but I am still unsure if we kept any service records on the time that they were in Scotland, does anyone know where I could check this :?:
Another question : Did the Polish soldiers who stayed in Scotland have to apply for Naturalisation :?:

Thanks
Ann

Hello Ann,

Interesting information on this page: Orders Of Battle, The Polish Army in Scotland
http://www.ostrycharz.free-online.co.uk/OB.html

An interesting Polish Armed Forces in Scotland Project
http://www.archiveshub.ac.uk/news/pafsp.html

This National Archives page refers to documents held by them in WO315 (Resettlement?) and to individual service records being still held by the Ministry of Defence. http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/cata ... fletID=372

See this page for the Army records address

I couldn’t see anything specific about naturalisation. The NA records may hold information about whether it was compulsory for those Poles who wished to stay permanently in the UK. I’m not sure whether such a condition would have been acceptable especially considering the situation in Poland at the end of the War. (i.e. Swear allegiance to the Monarch of Great Britain or get sent back to Poland to a unknown fate – sort of thing). My guess is that naturalisation would have been a separate and voluntary issue.

Hope this helps,
Alan

Alan,

This is just what I had been looking for, thank you, now I know where to write for information, that is, if there is any.
The many sites I had been on were good, but got a bit confusing when it came to who had what records etc, and writing to the Archives in Poland sounded a bit daunting.

Thanks for your help
Ann
