Militia or military?

Post by ladybird » Sat May 17, 2008 9:05 am

In 1795 John Jaffrey and Isobel Carmichael had their 3rd child named James.
Father John is listed as a soldier on the OPR.
For the 2 previous children no occupation is given. And for all subsequent children John is a weaver.
All the children were born in Barony, Lanark.

My thinking is that John was in the Militia - I understand that there were a "few problems" going on with the French :D

Did Glasgow have a Militia at that time and is there anyway to find records ..online if possible??

Oh and PS please, any idea why I can't find a marriage for John and Isobel

thank you, Sylvia

Hi Sylvia,

I tired a wlidcard search on ScotlandsPeople, and reached the same answer as you - no sign of any OPR for their marriage. I tried for John J*f*r* and I*b*l* *mic*l.

There are a few questions that would all have to be answered "yes".

(1) Were they definitely married?
(2) Were they married in the Established Church of Scotland?
(3) Was a record of their marriage ever made?
(4) If a record of the marriage was made, has it survived?
(5) Was it written in such a way as it would be correctly read and indexed?

Unfortunately, you are unlikely to know the answers to many of these questions, so the probable outcome is that the record is not there to be found.

All the best,

AndrewP

Hi all

Andrew,
I'd have to write "don't know" to all those questions, so I guess I'm stuck where I am for the time being. Thanks for looking, sometimes I miss things that should be obvious.

Lesley
Thank you, I have the papers for James from Nat Archives, that is John and Isobel's son (the one born 1795)...he served at Waterloo!!! :D
I don't have an Archibald, but will definately bear him in mind...cousin maybe? Who knows? Worth checking out though maybe he'll give me a clue.
This looks like him on the IGI, doesn't help at this stage, but there's nothing like going sideways just in case :D

Hello Sylvia,

Unless you have an unusual name (or one that can’t be overly misspelt) it can be difficult finding a soldier’s records if the Regiment is unknown. All you really know at present is that he was a soldier in 1795 and was out by the birth of the next child.

The National Archives has a number of research guides and maybe they’ll be of some help. http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/cata ... sindex.asp

In particular the following but there are others.
British Army: Useful Sources for Tracing Soldiers
Armed Forces: Militia 1757-1914

Thanks Alan
I think I'll have to try any and all variations....some birth certs even spell the name as Japhrie.
I'll keep on plodding I'm sure he'll turn up somewhere. Judging by the lack of marriage cert for him and Isobel this is probably my best bet to getting some info on him
