WW1 Death

Post by David Lang » Mon May 19, 2008 9:42 pm

I have found a death on SP for a possible missing relative of mine, it is in the service returns, is it worthwhile to pay for these?

What information if any is given on these?

I also have identified his medal card in the archives and would like to confirm it is him before I download it.

Is there other sources to find out who this guy might be? Like services records?

Not as much as a standard death entry. Headers are:
Rank, name in full, age, county of birth, date of death, place of death (e.g."F&F" - France & Flanders if WW1) cause of death (e.g. "K in A" killed in action) No parent names are given, so you can end up none the wiser...

I also have identified his medal card in the archives and would like to confirm it is him before I download it.

Have you checked at CWGC and SNWM web sites as these should give his service number which should match with that shown on the medal card summary? Sometimes parents are mentioned on the CWCG web site too, or place of birth at SNWM which can help with identity.
Service records, those that survived, are held at the National Archives at Kew. Local newspapers and war memorials are also worth checking out.

SNWM - www.snwm.org

Thanks Lesley

The CWGC stated that he was the husband of Mrs Duncan Lang of Big Kiln, Campbeltown.

The SNWM state place of Birth Campbeltown, but should be Glasgow but i suspect as his parents died before he was 2 he may have been "farmed" out.

The medal card number matches his number on cwgc site

The parents names would allow me to know 100% whether its him or not , guess i need to search all the Duncan Lang marriages till i find one that fits!!!

Hi David,

The other thing you could do is search the National Archives of Scotland site to see if there is a 'Soldier's Will' for him. I did this when I found a possible relation on the CWGC site and it gave me a name and address for the man's wife. When I later found her second marriage, the address on the certificate matched the soldier's will, and confirmed she was the widow of X. Searching for my man's marriage certificate confirmed that it was my relation who was killed in the war. I hope that makes sense! :?

If you have a CWGC death and then find a marriage, you often need a bit of information that links the two, as otherwise you may have two people with the same name, or even the same father' s name. In my case the info I needed was the address on the will.

NAS sent me a copy for £10, which is probably roughly equivalent to the credits I could have blown on SP looking at possible matches!

Best wishes

Brian

There is a will and i have ordered it it will hopefully put an end to what happened to Duncan one way or another.

Hello David,

British Army WWI Medal Rolls Index Cards, 1914-1920 are also available from Ancestry but their database is not yet complete. http://www.ancestry.co.uk/search/db.aspx?dbid=1262

If you need other material from Ancestry a monthly UK membership or pay-per-view may work out very much cheaper than obtaining Index Cards from N.A. The Ancestry images are of higher quality and may contain additional information as discussed here. http://talkingscot.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=11385

David,

Ancestry has two cards for Langs: Duncan Lang, Royal Garrison Artillery--almost no info--just regiment and number and D. Lang 9th Royal Scots, Machine Gun Corp.--more info on application dates etc.

Neither mentions any relatives, home address etc. These are indexes, the cards do give a page number for the actual roll.

Carol :)
Looking for: Clerihew, Longmuir/Longmore, Chalmers, Milne, Barclay in Newhills,
Munro, Cadenhead, Raitt, Ririe/Reary

In the likely time period for a marriage, there's only 6, of which a quite amazing 3 are in Campbeltown; brides' names being Mary, Janet and Helen.

Hi MB

Unfortunately i have checked the marriage and the will and its not "my" Duncan Lang. Its one of th eother who is still related to me but way out on a limb of the tree somewhere!!

My Duncan seems to be a mystery man who has disapeared from the earth after the 1881 census!!

Thought i would do a wee update, i eventually found the elusive Duncan, he died young in Glasgow but was registered as Duncan Ling, i found purely by accident when i was wildcarding another lang death, and saw the name thought worth a punt and low and behold it was him.
