Hi,

Just found Alexander Findlay on the 1841 census aged 58, it says his occupation is 'c lab army p.' Does any one have a clue what that is?
I noticed entries on the page for others occupations are c lab also but none with army p. (after thought - I suppose army p could be army pansioner!)

best wishes

Hi Helen,

Army P should be Army pensioner. C Lab will be a labourer of some sort. Do you have any clues from other documents as to his occupation?

See http://www.talkingscot.com/censuses/census-1841.htm for the list of abbreviations that the enumerators were suposed to use in the 1841 census.

All the best,

AndrewP

Helen,

Could it be Common Labourer

I don't know if such a thing exists - just a thought.

Hi Andrewp,

Thanks for that.

I have no further information regarding Alexander's occupation.

I looked at the link you sent, the only occupation that uses 'lab' is ag. lab.
under that it is broken down, one is showing as carter. It may be that!

He lived in Banff, so I suppose this is a possibliity.

many thanks

Hello Helen,

FreeCen has him as a “C Lab/army Pensioner”

Including him there are only 17 “C Lab’s” on 1841 FreeCen and they’re all in Banff. There are five “C Labourer’s” and 3 of them are in Banff. There are 188 “Common Labourer’s” from all over the place but none from Banff.

I’d say he was just a Common Labourer etc and the enumerator from Banff was in a bit of a hurry.

Alan

Later: Not to mention the "Com Lab's" etc I couldn't get figures on.

Hello Alan,

You may be right.

When I looked at the link Andrewp sent there was no common labourer on there for 1841.

Never mind, he was some kind of labourer anaway. That's good enough for me. :)

thank you
