Hi,
Does anyone know anything about the Royal Albert?
On the marriage certificate of Jane Dawson to William Mchendrie in 1855 it shows Jane's father as David Dawson a quarter master on board Royal Albert.
many thanks
Helen

Hi Helen
There may be several ships of the same name, but a quick google found this:
http://www.angelfire.com/ns/bkeddy/HIES ... lbert.html
http://www.saghs.org.au/ships/shipsR.htm
http://mariners.records.nsw.gov.au/1864/08/034roy.htm
Maybe try using Google to see what you can find... ships can be a bit confusing sometimes if there are several differnt types, from different countries with the same name...
Best wishes
Lesley

Hello Helen
I did a google too and found that the HMS Royal Albert was launched only in May of 1854 - so your man must have been among her first crew!
Make sure you put in HMS first, so you don't only come up with pics of the concert hall, etc.
I am an artist, so I always google images first - There is a nice print of her at http://www.portcities.org.uk/london/ser ... iewImage/4
"A print showing royalty attending the launch ceremony of a ship on the Thames. The print shows the launch of the new propeller-driven steamer HMS 'Royal Albert' on 13 May 1854. Queen Victoria presided over her launching ceremony. This event occurred at a high point in the history of Woolwich dockyard which was to close in 1869. 'Royal Albert', a 121-gun three-decker steam line-of battle ship, was immediately sent to the Crimea where she saw active service in the Black Sea. Since monarchy are traditionally involved at launch ceremonies when a ship is named, the print commemorates Queen Victoria’s presence. Named after the queen’s husband, the 'Royal Albert' flies the royal standard. Loyal supporters in the small boats wave to endorse both their monarch and the building of another warship for the nation, during the Crimean War."

Hi Lesley,
Thanks for your reply.
I checked google earlier but there were so many 'Royal Alberts' it got a bit confusing.
I am not sure when he was on the Royal albert as I have found him in the 1841 and 1851 census, his occupation is listed as a tailor. The birth certificate of Mary b 1833 show him as a sailor, so I am assuming he left the 'Royal Albert' sometime between 1833 and 1841.
I will keep looking.
all the best
Helen

Hi Helen
Talior may be correct as an occupation, but manys the time I've seen an occupation (Leith area) and not been at all sure if it really said Tailor or Sailor..... maybe have a second look at those occupations.
Best wishes

But the marriage date suggests he was still working on a ship in 1855.On the marriage certificate of Jane Dawson to William Mchendrie in 1855 it shows Jane's father as David Dawson a quarter master on board Royal Albert.

Ahhh, I see, I will check again. The family were living in Leith.
I will check the census on sp. this information was from Ancestry.
You have mentioned this to me before Lesley, I forgot that.
Winslosmom, I found that link as well. I was dismissing it because I was thinking he was aboard before 1855 because of the above information.
I will look at it again.
thank you
Helen

Hi Helen
It was only later, much later, that I realised he was one of my lot, another case of missing the blinking obvious, and I knew what he did for a living from other sources...its easily done ) But even with the original page, there may still be an element of doubt with Sailors and Tailors.
I'm sure Tailors were sometimes needed on ships, but my money would be on "sailor" if he is on the Royal Albert in 1855.
Best wishes
Lesley
Well, that is a coincidence...I had no idea your chap was from Leith!! But yes, given he is, I think you need to see the original page, not trust Ancestry (or anyone else) on that one. (I once mistranscribed, for Freecen, a Salt maker as a Sail makerThe family were living in Leith.

Yes, there it is, the 1841 census , Davids occupation is a sailor. Not sure what the 1851 census says. When I have some time I will try and upload it so others can have a look, please.
I am so grateful to this forum. I can talk out my thoughts and get some feed back.
thanks for all the help
