James Mason Rodger - MM & DCM 1945

Post by darylrodger » Sun Sep 07, 2008 12:39 pm

Hi,

Can anyone help with this one ?

My father-in-law James Rodger received a Military Medal & Distinguished Conduct Medal in 1945. he was with the Recce corps, 81st West African Div, in Arakan Yorkan, Burma.

I'm trying to locate any scottish newspaper stories about his investiture, possibly on 28th Nov 1945. I know there is a picture of him and his parents outside the Palace after the ceremony, but don't know which paper featured it, or when.

Any ideas as to where to look ?

Daryl

Hi Daryl,

A free search at http://archive.scotsman.com brings a few results. You'll have to decide whether it's worth £7.95 for a 24 hour pass.

Hello Daryl,

These are the London Gazette entry dates for 3319295 Sgt. Rodger, Glasgow.
MM - Gazette Issue 37262 published on the 11 September 1945. Page 5 of 8
DCM - Gazette Issue 37349 published on the 13 November 1945. Page 5 of 6

If you have the newspaper photograph and it is not marked with the date etc (as is usually the case with clippings) there may be some useful info that may identify the newspaper on the reverse side i.e. if it isn’t glued down.

The London Times isn’t much use as they didn’t include many photographs and usually reported quite large investitures by The Monarch by mentioning only VCs and GCs and a few high ranking officers. The 27th November investiture, reported 28th, mentioned only three by name, including Douglas Bader, out of a total of 300. It looks like The King then left for Sandringham for a few days.

From 26 September The King was in Edinburgh for a two day visit and there was an investiture at the Palace of Holyroodhouse on each day but no details. Any chance that was the Palace and for the MM?

Not much help,
Alan

Is it worth looking at Glasgow newspapers from late 1945 if he came from Glasgow?

'Evening Times' and 'Glasgow Herald' are two, were there any other daily newspapers in 1945? Would the Mitchell Library hold microfilm copies?

If your father-in-law was awarded the DCM and MM he must have been a very brave man.

Just to add to Adam's list. Other daily papers in Glasgow were, Daily Record, Daily Express,, Evening Citizen, evening News. As a delivery boy in the late 40s it was quite a chore to remember who got which paper or papers, not to mention the 13 Sunday papers.

As far as I remember, they do have microfilms of these at the Mitchell. See http://www.glasgow.gov.uk/en/Residents/ ... papers.htm

Best wishes
