Abbreviation meaning

Post by runepriest » Tue Oct 28, 2008 6:58 pm

Hey all;

Upon looking at my great uncle's attestation papers (not the uncle mentioned in a previous post), I came across this:

Question 10: Have you ever served in any Military Force:
Answer: Yes, 2 Years F o F Light Horse

Does anyone know what F o F Light Horse would be?

This relative emigrated to Canada before enlisting with the Canadian Expedionary Force.

Thanks for your help.

Could it be Fife & Forfar Yeomanry?

Hi Anne:

It could be............

What I had typed is exactly as it appears on his attestation papers.

He had come to Canada from Scotland, so I really have no clue as to what this entry could mean.

Did he survive the war Brian?

If not, you might be able to find him on The Scottish National War Memorial. Now and again, all the regiments in which individuals served are listed.

No,he did not survive the war. He died 2 Sep 1918 in France.

I checked the site you mentioned, he is not there.

He is listed with the Canadian Great War Project, but does not show any mention of his prior military service.

So, I am at a loss as to what this could be.

Until 1901 the Fife & Forfar yeomanry was known as the Fife & Forfar Light Horse. It may be your Great Uncle's two years service in the F&FLH was during the Boer War?

That is entirely possible, as I have no knowledge of his history prior to his enlistment with the CEF.

Are there any records available for servicemen who served in the Boer War?

Thanks.

Brian

Edit: Upon examing his attestation application, which is online at the Canadian Archives, it states that David Lawson had spent 2 years with the F & F Light Horse. His military record that I obtained from the Archives listed his military service as F o F Light Horse.

Have you checked his CWGC certificate? That might give more details.

Good luck,

Hi Roxy:

How would I go about checking this certificate?

On a related note...........I have recieved a letter from the Dept of Veterans Affairs; L/Sgt David Hampton was the recipient of the following awards: Military Medal, British War Medal, Victory Medal, and the GRV Memorial Cross.

Now I have to try and find any surviving descendants :?

Hi Brian,

I take it this is his entry on the Commonwealth War Graves Commission website.
