Good Afternoon All
I wonder if anyone on Talking Scot can help. I have taken advantage of Ancestry's offer and used it to find ancestors military records etc, but no matter what options I try I cannot find any records for the above.
S/43256 Pte Alexander Finlayson Royal Highlanders born 19th June 1896 at Megginch cottages Errol, Died 21 Mar 1918 in France I have his medal card but this is all.
I assume he joined up with his brother in Sept1914.
I have his brother's service record but not his.
yours in anticipation

Hi Bruce
I seem to be having problems finding folk too, though I suspect some are not turning up because they are not there. I've not that much experience with Ancestry, so I hope someone will be along soon who is better at searching their databases and coming up with results. I usually find there are too many results returned, even when I think I've specified what I was looking for. I have a couple of names begining with Mc, and I'm not finding either of them, even though I know one of their records does exist as I have copies of the pages from TNA....
I begin to think there is something "up" with the Mc/Macs. A search for Macdonald returns only 12 possibles, which is way too few. Either not transcribed, or the majority of the Mc/Macs were amongst the destroyed records?
Best wishes

Also, just thinking about it, my "Mc", of whose records I have a copy, was an officer, so maybe that explains why he would not turn up in this particular series of records, which appears to be only WO363, although of course, his medal card is there in the other series.
Best wishes

Have you tried searching by Regimental number? If he does not turn up using that, my guess would be that he is most likely not there.S/43256 Pte Alexander Finlayson Royal Highlanders

Hi Bruce and Lesley,
I just did a search on Ancestry UK for Alexander MacDonald, clicked on Military and got 3 1/2 pages of Alexander MacDonalds or A. MacDonalds--about 175 of them. I clicked on the A. MacDonalds randomly several times and they were all Alexanders. Only the first page of them approx. have the birth date/place information in the initial listing. For the rest you have view the image, which for me on dial-up takes forever.
Bruce, have you been through all of these or are you searching differently than I did?
