Hello blue100uk and welcome to Talking Scot! [talkingscot]

I hope someone will be able to recognize the uniform and help you in your quest. Since your father's birth is after the cutoff date ( see http://talkingscot.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=6601 ), we can't discuss his actual birth details on the forum, but I'm wondering whether you have tried to order his birth certificate from Scotland's People, to find out who his parents were? A quick search shows no one by that name born in Lanarkshire in 1921, so perhaps the birth year is off? I checked 1915 to 1925 and there are only 11 matches in all of Lanark:

3 in 1915
0 in 1916
1 in 1917
1 in 1918
2 in 1919
0 in 1920
0 in 1921
1 in 1922
0 in 1923
2 in 1924
1 in 1925

All the best,
Sarah

Hello blue100uk

I have long been hoping to track down a Glasgow link to my Tait family, so I give some details - just in case . . . . .

William Tait b. Eckford, Rox 1873 m. Margaret Gilchrist b. 1873, Milton of Campsie in Milton of Campsie 1895.

William worked with the railways and had moved to Springburn, Glasgow by 1891. William and Margaret had at leat two children: William b. abt. 1897 and Alexander b. abt. 1899 (both born in Springburn)

Could your Alexander be a child of one or other?

I know that their father, William Sr. died at 74 Crowhill Road, Bishopbriggs aged 62, probably at the house of a relative/child as his "usual residence" was Largs, Ayrshire. This William had 3 brothers one of whom, James b. 1880 had at least one son also James, b. 1918 probably in Springburn.

Another of William's brothers, Alexander, became a gamekeeper, moved to England and had two children, Caroline and Alexander (b. 1887), before dying young. Both children went into separate orphanages. I have nothing further on these children.

If you want to go into this further off post you could send me a PM.

Yours, ever hopeful

Lorna

Have replied to your PM but not quite sure why it does not appear in "sent" box, only in "out" box. Maybe this just means you have gone to bed, (sensible chap) and have not read it yet. Anyway, just to let you know that I did reply and if you did not get it - let me know.

Hi Lorna,
The messages stay in the OUT box until they have been opened and read, then they show up in SENT  So you were right about the going to bed part-- hope you eventually got some sleep also!

Cheers,
Sarah

Sorry, I don't know how to find the photograph, but I may be able to identify the badge.

Can someone post a link to the relevant picture in the Gallery.

Regards

Adam

Anne

Yes, I think your right, but I think it may actually be The Glasgow Highlanders.

The Glasgow Highlanders, HLI, based their uniform on the Black Watch and although the badges of both BlackWatch / Glasgow Highlanders and the HLI look very similar from this angle the bits at the side (sorry I'm sure there is a proper word for them) are more rounded on the HLI badge.

The reason I'm saying it's GH is that a Second World War Black Watch soldier would probably be wearing a tam o'shanter with a red hackle.

Cheers

Adam

The Glasgow Highlanders - would that be another name for The City of Glasgow Regiment or is that something different alltogether?
