BOER WAR DATABASES

Was Great-grandfather not at home in 1901? Maybe he was in South Africa. These databases, though not yet complete, may set you on the right path to finding his records.

I hope they’re useful,

Thanks for these. I've salted them away for future study. The 2 brothers of my great-grandmother were in the Boer war and she was a nurse, though I think she came home around 1900/01. This is the picture of one of the brothers http://www.black-isle.info/cromarty/ima ... ber586.asp though it doesn't look like a uniform he's wearing.

Thanks Lesley,

That’s a great photograph Keewik. It does look like civilian gear.

All the best,
Alan

It might be worth pointing out that the middle one, the roll of Honour database only has just over 27,000 names out of 500,000 men and women who served in the Boer War. It mainly deals with those who died rather than those who served and returned.

Apart from Boer War memorials on the RoH website (only one Scottish one with names recorded) its sources are listed as:

IN MEMORIAM ROLL OF HONOUR IMPERIAL FORCES ANGLO-BOER WAR 1899-1902 - Compiled by Steve Watt
THE BOER WAR CASUALTY ROLL 1899-1902 - Compiled by Alexander M Plamer
THE QUEEN'S SOTH AFRICA MEDAL TO THE ROYAL NAVY AND THE ROYAL MARINES - Compiled by W H Fevyer and J W Wilson.
THE V.C. AND D.S.O. BOOK VOUME II and VOLUME III published by Naval and Military Press.
THE SOUTH AFRICAN WAR CASUALTY ROLL THE NATAL FIELD FORCE 20TH OCT. 1899 - 26TH OCT. 1900 - Published by J B Hayward & Son.
FIELD INTELLIGENCE DEPARTMENT 1899-1902 HONOURS AND AWARDS & CASUALTIES & MEDAL ROLLS - Compiled by David Buxton
THE LAST POST - ROLL OF HONOUR OF OFFICERS WHO FELL IN SOUTH AFRICA 1899-1902 by Midlred G Dooner

Thank you so much for that free link, Alan. What a bit of luck as I have found my husband's grandfather who arrived out there as it all finished!
