Royal Scots Casualty Search

Post by donnab » Wed Jan 07, 2009 2:13 am

I’m not that familiar with searching for documents in Scotland I hoping that someone might be able to point me in the right direction. I found a UK Soldiers document on Ancestry’s for an Alfred White Michie who died 17 Nov 1917 his regiment was the Royal Scots he confirms he was killed in action, he was born and lived in Glasgow.

I’ve search through the message boards and suggested links on the war document searches but have not been unable to confirm any information on him to confirm he is indeed the Alfred W. Michie I’m looking for. What I would like to confirm is his date of birth or at least year. The Alfred Michie I’m looking for would have been born around 1898 which if he is the same person would have only been 19 when he was killed. What I would is to like is to confirm his parents and year of birth. Would anyone know where I might find this information or where to go to find it? When I did find his name on the various search pages suggested they only provided me the same info I have now nothing more.

I’ve even search various message boards for others looking for the same type of info but wasn’t able to found anything.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Donna

Looking up the Scottish National War Memorial database he had served in the Highland Light Infantry (Regimental Number 2475) before moving to 5th /6th Bn Royal Scots. The SNWM entries have no mention of 17th Bn Royal Scots but the CWGC entry above does say he was attached to that battalion from the 5th / 6th Bn.

Hi Donna,

I had the same problem trying to find someone on the CWGC website - I kept forgetting that you have to search by initials. I think I'm so used to searching for full names on other sites that I missed this and kept getting the 'no records' message.

Best wishes

Brian

Thank you Brian for tip thats why I didn't find it than either I was using the full name but than again I recall not putting in anything for the first name and it didn't work. Anyway I find Talking Scot message boards very helpful everyone is very friendly not all genealogy message boards on various sites are like this. Thanks again Brian
