WW1 Medal Roll

Post by smudge » Mon Mar 16, 2009 10:11 pm

This is my first post. Great Site. I hope some one out there will be able to help.
My husbands grandfather was in the army from 1900 and left in 1912 most of this time was spent in India. He enlisted in Aug 1914 and served throughout WW1. From a newspaper cutting we found he was awarded the Military Medal. I have two problems with his Medal Roll Index Card. The Military Medal is not listed and there is an entry on the card saying Deleted from followed by letters and numbers. [help]

Hi Smudge,

Welcome to Talking Scot. Can you tell us some more details such as his name, age, place of birth and residence so we may try to find some information for you?

Hi Smudge and welcome!

Well, I thought I would just type out what is on the card, so someone knowledgeable about military things could explain... but there is a lot of stuff written on that card! There are entries for Victory, British and Star medals, as well as "Clasp & Roses issued". I'm not confident I could correctly transcribe all the numbers and letters. Would you like to upload the image in the gallery so others can interpret it? I can do it if you like, since I'm staring at it right now

All the best,
Sarah

P.S. I just realized you are in Edinburgh, so probably asleep now... and by the time you get up, I'll be asleep here in the U.S. Well, we'll get it sorted out somehow!

I'm north o' Embra an' I'm still up!!
But I suppose I'm not exactly known for going to [snore] early.

Best wishes

Hi Smudge,

Like Sarah, I had a look at the card at Ancestry.com, but not having the required deciphering skills, could not get any further. The people at these forums might be able to help.

http://britishmedalforum.com/index.php which looks like you have to join before reading the posts,

and

http://1914-1918.invisionzone.com/forums/ all about the Great War.

Hello Smudge,

The Long, Long Trail - The British Army of 1914-1918, has heaps of information about just that and includes:

Tips on interpreting a medal index card.
http://www.1914-1918.net/grandad/mic.htm

Campaign Medals including information about the “clasp and roses”
http://www.1914-1918.net/grandad/themedals.htm

British Gallantry Awards.
http://www.1914-1918.net/grandad/gallantry2.htm

Note that all Gallantry Awards were advertised in the London Gazette. I couldn’t spot your fellow there but you’ll see other nearby pages on the 1914-1918 site that give hints as to Gazette searching. Links are right at the bottom of each page.

The London Gazette can be searched online here http://www.london-gazette.co.uk/search

Hope that’s useful,
Alan
