Soldiers stationed at Edinburgh Castle around 1879

Post by JMDPotter » Wed Apr 01, 2009 10:02 am

Hi everyone

I have just joined the site so I apologise if this post is on the incorrect page.
I have a marriage cert and childrens birth certs that states Peter Henretty was stationed at Edinburgh Castle c1879 but I have not been able to find him on any census info or indeed a birth or death record for him in Scotland. The marriage cert states that he is a bandsman with the 50 Reg L again I am unsure what the actual regiment is as this does not show up on any google searches that I have done. His marriage cert shows
he was 24 years old on 18.11.1879 and his parents were:

father - Peter Henretty, a Tailor (Journeyman)
mother - Jane Armstrong, deceased on 18.11.79.

I decided to look at English records as several visits to Edinburgh got me nowhere and discovered this

Registration District: IPSWICH
1929 Death in the Sub-district of : IPSWICH-EASTERN
in the COUNTY OF IPSWICH UD.
When and where died: Fourth October 1929, Heathfields,
Woodbridge Road , UD
Name and surname: PETER ORSINI HENRETTE
Sex: MALE
Age: 74
Occupation: (of Cotore?) Street, BLIT Ipswich, UN.
Musician Cornet Player - an army
Pensioner
Cause of death: I a Senile Decay
b Cariac Failure No. pm
certified by B.G. Shellington M.B
Informant: A.L. Jones, Occupier, Heathfields,
Woodbridge Road, Ipswich

Please can anybody advise if it is possible to view any records at the Castle to see if I can find out if this is the same person. I am ready to thow in the towel with this one.

Many Thanks

Hi Jackie and welcome back!
Someone may be along who can help you with the Edinburgh Castle question, but as far as finding him in a census, it would help to know his wife's name and children's names and birth dates. Were his children all born in Scotland?

All the best,
Sarah

Hi Tracey and Sarah

Since I posted this morning I have been doing some more research. I had the birth from Free BMD but could not tie the two together although the date obviously fitted. I knew from marriage cert that his mother was Jane Armstrong and some kind soul found him age 3 on the 1861 census down south which tied in with the birth that you have posted and the fact that his gran shared the same name as his mum and was on the census at the same address finally solved the mystery. Six months of pulling my hair out are now over.

Many Thank for your input. I now know that his wife's mother was called Jane too but was born in Ireland so off on another search. I only all records were as informative as Scottish ones life would be so much easier

Indexed as Henretta (although it does say Henrette) age 42 in 1901 he's stationed at Colchester and has gained the rank of sergeant.

Thankyou for that, did you happen to notice what regiment he was serving in I have 50 REG L from marriage cert but that does not mean anything to me. I tried to google it but there was so much info coming up regarding regiments that I have to admit that I gave up.

There doesn't seem to be any indication of regiment, unless I'm missing something. The census is just under "District Garrison 2".

I'm hoping some of the TS members with experience in military matters will come along and enlighten you on the regiment.

They seem to have gone back and forth quite a bit, as evidenced by the fact that on the 1861 census, one of his sisters was born in Scotland and the other in England.

Sarah

Sarah and Annette

Thanks for looking.

The man is the bain of my life as the spelling of his name keeps changing I have been unable to trace him on any other census. He may have been abroad if he was a soldier but I know he was home in 1901 but still no trace. Unfortunately as all searches apart from this have been done in Scotland I do not have Ancestry as i was advised it would be a waste of money as it directs you to Scotlands People for a lot of records so have had to rely on people's kindness.
