Angus Kerr - military records

I have received a request today from a lady that I have been introduced to on another genes site who wondered if anybody on here could help her. I am hoping that the success of my other two postings continues

My 5 x Great Grandfather, Angus Kerr, was a Private of the Breadalbane Fencibles quartered in Earlsferry, Fife, Scotland when he was married to Anne Monro on January 30th 1798. He was still there on June 7th, 1810, according to his son's Birth Certificate, or maybe he had been elsewhere in between the years, who knows.

I don't know which regiment he was in, but I would like to know where I may find his military records or the like - it would be a start!

Can anyone advise me where I may find those particular records in Scotland. I live abroad and would, therefore, prefer a website address, but I think that is asking too much, but do get back to Scotland occasionally; normally with a flying visit to Edinburgh

Any advise would be of great help.

There are many results which may be of use including lists of officers, monthly pay list & etc.

You would need to go to NAS to see the documents.

Hello Jackie,

There’s a book called “A military history of Perthshire, 1660-1902.” published Perth, 1908. Within its pages there’s a chapter or something or other referring to “The Fourth (or Breadalbane) Regiment of Fencible Men. 1793-1802.”

I suppose that would be the correct title of the Breadalbane Fencibles. Maybe if a copy of the book could be got hold of it may shed some light on the matter. http://books.google.com.au/books?id=wQt ... thshire%22

As to the Battalion I suppose it would have been the 1st or the 2nd as the 3rd was in Ireland. I haven’t come across anything to indicate there was a large military presence around Earlsferry at that time and maybe there was only a Company or small Detachment there belonging to the 2nd who appear to have been in Edinburgh about then or to the 1st wherever in Scotland they were. The 1st and 2nd Battalions were disbanded in 1798 and the 3rd in 1802.

You could also search the National Archives to see if there’s anything there. I think there was something for possibly the John MacIntosh of the Breadalbane Fencibles who married at Earlsferry the same year, the one I referred to in the other thread, but it was a pension file. http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/sear ... d=True&j=t
