Post by garydevine1995 » Wed Feb 09, 2011 4:08 am

hi i am looking for an army record during WWI. my great grand father alexander mcdermott/mcdermitt allison enlisted during WWI i am not sure what year but i no he was a butcher and lived in glasgow at the time i was told by my gran that he lied about his age to join but he was born in 1895 so even if he did join the army in 1914 he would still have been of age to join so i am not sure about that. can anyone help me find a record for this or even tell me were online or in scotland i could go to find it. i dont no what info it will give but i no his father is called walter allsion his mother sarah mcallum/mccallum he was born in 1895 he was a butcher at the time he enlisted and he lived in glasgow. thats all i know. if anyone could find the record for me that would be great. thank you :D oh just to add i also had a my other great grandfather william devine whom enlisted i suspect during WWI i no he fought in the battle of the somme and so did alexander. william was born in 1893 or 92 he lived in hamilton, lanark, scotland at the time it would be good if you could fin this too.

Hello Gary,

About two thirds of WW1 British Army service records were destroyed by bombing during the WW2 Blitz. Records of those soldiers who survived WW1 and who applied for a disability pension were held elsewhere and escaped the bombing. These two sets of WW1 records can be accessed at Ancestry, a subscription site, and possibly elsewhere.

After WW1, campaign medals were issued to eligible soldiers. These medal records, on index cards, survived and are available at Ancestry and elsewhere, including online at the National Archives. They contain only very basic information. http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/docu ... medals.asp

You’ll find the names of British Commonwealth service personnel who died during WW1 on the Commonwealth War Graves site. http://www.cwgc.org/ Those who died and who had a Scottish connection are also recorded on the Scottish National War Memorial site http://www.snwm.org/website/frames.html (click on Services on the left and scroll down to the WW1 search link)

It can sometimes be very difficult to tell which record is the one you’re looking for. It’s probably a good idea to have a careful read of ‘Researching a Soldier’ on the ‘Long Long Trail’ site so that you have an idea of how things stand. http://www.1914-1918.net/grandad/grandad.htm

Hope that helps,
Alan

Your local library may have free access to Ancestry - the Mitchell Library in Glasgow certainly does, so it may be worth the trip.

The East Kilbride library appear to have a family history area, so maybe worth giving them a phone to see if they offer access to Ancestry before making the trip to the Mitchell.

You can access the record at any Glasgow Library. He was living at Cathcart Road, Govanhill at the time - bizarrely enough a 5 minute walk from Govanhill Library.
