Royal Artillery, Orkney

Post by hwickham » Wed Aug 24, 2011 10:04 pm

Hi there,

My great-grandfather is in the 1871 census for Evie, Orkney, described as a Sergeant, Coast Brigade, R.A. (Royal Artillery?) living with wife and children at the schoolhouse. Does anyone know what he would have been doing there, please? Thanks.

Hi Heather

A Google on Coast Brigade, R.A., should soon answer you question !

Among the Googled results the “Genealogically Yours“ one looks useful.

There’s something here from “The Army Book for the British Empire” (p220).

There’s a quote (or paraphrase?) on this rootsweb page from “The History of Coast Artillery in the British Army” which may be worth a read. http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/t ... 1242173773

And there’s a bit in “Records of the Scottish Volunteer Force” about Artillery activity on Orkney. (p163) http://www.archive.org/stream/recordsof ... 2/mode/2up
