78th Foot.....

Post by annpa » Sat Feb 18, 2006 4:05 pm

have moved this here as separate topic.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi all
One of my husband's ancestors joined the 78th foot. Through all the various BMDs and censuses, it appears as 78th Foot, 78th Highlanders, Cameronians. Were the 78th the Cameronians? and why should a young lad from Norwich with no ties in Scotland join the Cameronians? One would hae thought he would have joined the Norfolks, as several of more recent generations did.
can't wait for the 1851 census to see if he was in scotland already then. He was in Edinburgh castle 1860/61 that I know of and then Inverness-shire.
Any ideas?
cheers

78th foot

The Cameronians seem to be a red herring, although occurring on a death entry of one of the children.
Found a great site, courtesy of Marilyn from an old post of May last year :
www.regiments.org
Found that the 78th, from 1793 to 1881 were actually The Ross-Shire Buffs - that makes it even more puzzling that a young Norwich boy should join up. How did he hear of them!

The name that occurs in the censuses is Ardersier. Aslo Campbelltown, Ardersier. Was there a fort there? Where would the barracks have been near Inverness?

This is a brand new route for me so I'm finding it fascinating!
Cheers

There'a a possibility that the name is correct, but you need to do some digging.

In 1870 the 79th of Foot were the Cameron Highlanders, known also at earlier times as the Cameronian Volunteers, but distinct and different from the 26th of Foot, the Cameronian Regiment.

The digging that you will need to do is to see if at any point disbandments, renumbering, etc., meant that the 79th were for a time the 78th.

The regiment most often known as the 78th of Foot was the Highland Ross-shire Buffs, who, from 1881 becase the 2nd Battalion of the Seaforth Highlanders.
