17th century artillery.....

Post by robineaston » Thu Mar 16, 2006 5:09 pm

Where can I find records for artillery officers? I searched the book "English army lists", which has commissions for the 1600s and 1700s, but no artillery. The person I'm looking for was a Lt. Col. in the artillery some time between 1670 and 1690, so I guess he must have left some traces into the books.

Best wishes
Robin

Thanks for the link. The book includes commission lists for the same years. I try to contact the National Archives if they've got the artillery there.

Hello Robin,

Just thought I would poke my head in here because of your name (Easton) which I am also researching. I was quite surprised to see another name I am searching for...Main.

I suppose it is all just coincidence, but I have a John Easton married Janet Main in 1878 Glasgow. So I thought I would ask if that was familiar to you.

All the best and welcome,

Nina

Easton & Main

Post by robineaston » Fri Mar 17, 2006 2:22 pm

Hi Nina

My Easton family has lived in Bathgate, Muiravonside and Carriden in West Lothian. Alexander Easton (b. 1794) married Margaret Main (b. 1791) in Carriden, and this is my Main connection. Do you know who were the parents of John Easton and Janet Main? The Eastons and the Mains intermarried a lot in Carriden, perhaps there's a connection.

Sorry Robin, there is probably no connection. But for interest's sake, I will post the following:

My Eastons are fron Dumbarton and Renfrewshire, and later Glasgow, and my Mains are from Ross and Cromarty. One Main sister married in Aberdeenshire though.

John Easton was born in about 1854 in Dumbartonshire, and his wife Janet Main was born in about 1852 in Portmahomack Ross and Cromarty. John's parents were William Easton and Christina Clark. John and Janet married in Greenock, Renfrew in 1878.

Sorry I couldn't be much help, but I always like to post to people with two of my family names together such as you. And you never know, we may link up somewhere!

Happy hunting,

Nina
