Greenlees.....

Post by Pandabean » Sat May 27, 2006 4:47 pm

Hi,

I was wondering if it is possible to find anything out on a Robert T Greenlees. I know he served in the great war as I have his medal (service medal) but I know nothing more.

Is there any way to find out more?

Also is it possible to obtain photographs of WW1 that were used when the people signed up?

Have you checked out The National Archives site? There are 2 Robert Greenlees on the WW1 medal roll index, but you really need to have some idea of what regiment he was with and his regimental number (that' on the index) to find his army service records.

Best wishes,
Meg

I know that he was a Private, not sure of what regiment. His no. may be on the side of the medal but I cant check it at the moment.

Hi Pandabean

There are 7 Robert Greenlees on the medal roll between 1912 - 1920 - but only two are Privates - one in the Queens Regiment and the other in the Army Service Corps. Both have their service numbers displayed and are filed under WO372/8 - it should not be too difficult to get their full service records - if they were not amongst the 'burnt records'. You can view the search list on the medal roll for Greenlees on this link:-

here

Good luck with your searches

Regards

Ted

Thanks. Is it worth buying the medal cards if you know the right person?

You mention the full service records. Where do I obtain them and what would they contain?

Hi Pandabean,
you can download the Medal Card (about £3 - £3.50).

Full records vary. Should tell you where and when he signed up.
Where he served. Next of kin, any disciplinaries, any medical mishaps.

Hi Pandabean, (about medal cards)

the medal cards at the national archives witll tell you what medals your man qaulified for. The WW1 medals sometimes have the service number inscribed around the rim.

The medal card will tell you name, rank, service number, the first area of battle he entered but not his next of kin.

I cant seem to find any medal card related to him.

These are the details that are on the side of the medal:

5010T.S. R.T Greenlees. TR. R.N.R

I have no idea what the RNR means, I am wondering if the S means seargent?

I also have another medal probably related to a friend of his. R Wilson. I have managed to find him on the NA

Hi Pandabean
Someone on here may know more about medal cards and military matters, but I don't!
I've had a few reasons to visit the foum below & the folks on this forum are very knowledgeable when it comes to things military:
http://1914-1918.invisionzone.com/forums/
They may be able to help if you are stuck.

I think TR might be Training Reserve and RNR mignt be Royal Naval Reserve - see below:

best wishes
