Military Birth Question

Post by emanday » Tue Jul 04, 2006 11:56 am

Been sent here as some of you lovely military searchers migh be able to help.

Found a record of Robert Stewart's birth in a list of Army Births & Baptisms on 1837 online...

Stewart, Robert - Born Mauritius 1859. Father's Regiment 5th, VOL 924 Page 7

Here's the thing... Volume 924 page 7 of WHAT exactly? Anyone know? Also, were we just being "present" in Mauritius at that time, or was a conflict in progress? What was the 5th Regiment?

Rhetorical Question (But wouldn't hate an answer  ) - Why is it you start off with one question and more start to pop into your head

Hi Emanday,

You need the volume number and page number when you order the registration certificate from Kew, I believe, as well as the district/county. The order form specifically asks for them. I ordered online.

Hi emanday,

Here is the website where you can order online. It is the Registration Offices. Not cheap though! Well compared to the Scottish certificates, anyway!

Assuming that this means the 5th Regiment of Foot, that was then "The 5th [The Northumberland] Regiment of Foot", later known as The Northumberland Fusiliers.

The number is the precedence of the regiment, based on it's seniority, deriving from its date of raising.

Until recently, the First of Foot was the The Royal Scots (The Royal Regiment), but whit ra heck happens now they've been amalgamated with the Kings Own Scottish Borderers, and become but one of five battalions in the new Scottish "super regiment" whose name will not pass my lips, I dinna ken, but.

RIP "Pontius Pilate's Bodyguard" :!: :!:

Of course :!:

In 1837 The 14th (The Buckinghamshire) Regiment of foot.

In 1870 The Buckinghamshire Regiment.

After the Cardwell reforms in 1881 see http://www.regiments.org/regiments/uk/inf/014WYork.htm and
http://www.regiments.org/deploy/uk/reg-inf/014-1.htm , as the
regiments.org site is not that easy to navigate if you don't have some relevant knowledge.
