Any ideas on how to find if my ancestor was with the 92nd Highlanders on the IOM? he does not appear on the 1851 census on the IOM and I cannot find him on the 1841 or 1851 in Scotland or England.
Only clue I have is that he was buried by the Govt Chaplin when he died there in 1864. On the 1861 IOM census he is shown as a Coachman and when he married in 1859 he was also shown as a Coachman. His name was GEORGE MATTHEWSON but on the 1861 he was transcribed as MATTERSON.
The 1859 marriage (his second) and his death both occurred on the IOM - I need to know what Scottish County he was born in so iI can trace back.
Other info I have is that his father was named WILLIAM MATTHEWSON and in 1859 he was shown as a STEWARD but I do not know if he was still alive at this stage.
All help gratefully accepted, thank you

And welcome to TalkingScot.
To see a listing of the 92nd of Foot's place of service, see http://www.regiments.org/deploy/uk/reg-inf/092-1.htm , there's nothing obvious relating to IoM ......but that's not to say that the regiment, or a detachment, didn't serve there at the period of your interest.
The on-line TNA catalogue at doesn't really help, but could this person be related ??.........
WO 121/118/114 GEORGE MATHEWSON alias GEORGE MATTHEWSON Born HORSHAM, Sussex Served in 62nd Foot Regiment Discharged aged 31 after 11 years 10 months of service Covering dates give year of enlistment to year of discharge. 1799-1812 ??
The lack of a relevant entry in the TNA on-line catalogue doesn't mean that there isn't relevant info at Kew, just that any entry of possible interest hasn't yet got to the stage of such an entry.
Given the knowledge that you have of dates, places and the regiment, then it could be worth employing the services of a researcher expert in the Kew records (I can recommend one), and it could well also be worth contacting the Gordon Highlanders' (92nd of Foot) archives in Aberdeen in case they have any helpful regimental records from that time, - they don't have copies or the equivalent of the Kew records, but there may be some helpful records in terms of the individual and/or info in terms of service in the IoM........... A charitable donation to the support of the regimental archives, - say £10, - will always ensure a swift response !!

David, thanks v much for your advice. I am waiting for a response from the IOM to inducate whether the info I have really does indicate that George Matthewson was in the 92nd before I follow your suggestions.
So far, I have not found any of my Matthewsons in Sussex but will bear the one you mention in mind. My George's family went to London after his untimely death in 1864 so they are centred around Middlesex - I still have to find the Scottish connection, George was born there but I have no idea of which County.
Thanks again and greetings from Perth, Western Australia.

Question for David please
Good day David,
Could you please let me have the name & contact details of the Researcher you mentioned earlier?
Also, do you think it is possible to look for my ancestor with the skant information that I have?
I am not even sure that he was in the Army, all I am working on is that he was buried by the Govt Chaplin while all others were buried by the regular Vicar.
My ancestor (George Matthewson) only appears on the 1861 Census then he inconsiderately died in 1864!
Thank you v much & kind regards
