Where to now?

Hello all

Having identified my gggg grandfathers military regimental dress in a photograph,i think!Does anyone know anything about the The Royals Scots(lothian Division) serving in India between 1882-1920.
The description is as follows:

Head-dress- kilmarnock bonnet, it has a black feather and a red torrie in the middle of the top,worn up until WW1. The scarlet doublet, worn since 1881 has blue facings, the collar having abrass thistle badge.The cuffs are edged in white pipingand have three brass buttons.The lowland regiment trews are of Hunting Stewart tartan.Above the two stripes on his right wrist sleeve is a cross like a sword and rifle not really sure.
Can anyone tell me where to find enlistment and discharge papers
I think he could have been serving circa 1900/1910.

there is a picture of the uniform minus the rifle cross above the right hand stripes just above the wrist.in my picture hes holding what looks like a whip or a stick.

That looks like the 2nd Battalion of The Royal Scots (Lothian Regiment), - see http://www.regiments.org/deploy/uk/reg-inf/001-2.htm for the places.

His army papers should be held at The National Archives at Kew, and could be very informative.

Given the complexity of the military archives, it can be better to use a professional researcher expert in these records. I can recommend one whom I've used for several years.

Thankyou for your reply, having looked at the national archives site a professional reseacher seems the the best way to proceed.Having said that narrowing the time frame is difficult
He was born in 1861
married in 1891 (was he serving before he was married)
3 children born in Ayrhire
My gggrandfather born in Lanarkshire 1895 as were rest of siblings
He appears in the census' as a steelworker.
If he enlisted after 1900 he would be in his 40s( wouldn't he be to old)
Any suggestions to narrow down time frame.
One would assume he would of enlisted in Ayshire, but as ive identified his regiment I must assume he joined when he moved to Lanarkshire

There lies the mystery
Any thougts would be appreciated

He may have been in the Army before 1900s and was in the reserves similar to todays TA.

Around that time there is the Boer War so they may have been mobilised.

I have an ancestor who served in the 42nd in west indies and Egypt was discharged due to a wound , but was called up to a reserve battallion for over 10 years , this was at Fort George in the Highlands
