My Grandmother always said her father William McDonald LIVINGSTONE served in the 43rd of Foot Regiment (later the Black Watch) She said he was a SGT MAJOR and an armourer. She had a photo of him in a uniform of tartan trews, plain Jacket and a sash across his chest which she said was red. He wore a Glengarry Cap.
He was born in Glasgow in abt 1844/45. could someone please advise me where or how I might be able to trace his service record. Thank you
regards Chris in Oz

You need to access the army records at TNA at Kew.chrisels wrote:My Grandmother always said her father William McDonald LIVINGSTONE served in the 43rd of Foot Regiment (later the Black Watch) She said he was a SGT MAJOR and an armourer. Increasing numbers of records are coming on line on the TNA Catalogue, but it may be the case the relevant reference for someone born 1844/45, is not yet in the index, witness ..........
WO 97/173/75 WILLIAM GRAY Born LIVINGSTON, West Lothian Served in 3rd Foot Guards Discharged aged 35 1800-1816
WO 97/578/119 WILLIAM LIVINGSTON alias WILLIAM LIVINGSTONE Born POLMONT, Stirlingshire Served in 42nd Foot Regiment Discharged aged 40 1831-1853
WO 97/1233/172 WILLIAM HAMILTON Born LIVINGSTONE [LIVINGSTON], West Lothian Served in Royal Artillery Discharged aged 40 1798-1815
WO 121/73/83 WILLIAM LIVINGSTON Born AHABAG, Monaghan Served in 70th Foot Regiment Discharged aged 18 after 1 year 6 months of service 1804
WO 121/80/62 WILLIAM LEVINGSTON alias WILLIAM LIVINGSTON Born SHANKHILL, Armagh Served in 28th Foot Regiment Discharged aged 39 after 19 years of service
Given that he was a Sergeant Major, it could also be worth your making contact with the Black Watch archives at Balhousie Castle in order to see what info they have, see also http://talkingscot.com/forum/viewtopic. ... =balhousie .
