Hi All,
Have downloaded the OPR marriage for my GGGGgrandparents. They were married in 1803 in Ayr. My GGGGgrandfather is described as being a Soldier in the Army of Reserve Ayr. This is the only time I have seen this description for him, by the time his son is born he is a weaver and on his sons DC he is also a Weaver. What is the Army of Reserve, and would there be any kind of records for people who were in it? I thought the Reserve Army was the Militia, but there are others on the same page who are described as being a Soldier in the Ayrshire Militia and the Berwick Militia.

Can't speak for the 1800's but when my late husband came out of the RN in 1984 he was still regarded as qualifying as a "Reserve".
He explained that this simply meant that his skills, should the situation require it, might mean that he could be called back into service.
Was it the same back then?

Hi All,
Thanks for clearing up what a reserve is Mary.
Have had a bit of a GOOGLE to see if I can find out anything else about him. I found some information that indicates that the 26th (cameronians) Regiment of Foot 1st and 2nd, took reserves from Ayr in 1803. John and Mary were married in 1803, but only appear to be having their 3rd child in 1814. Was thinking that mayby this could indicate he was away somewhere.
Would there be anywhere I could find out about reserves that were with the 26th Regiment of Foot. (sorry about my ignorance on all terms to do with the military, I come from a long line of weavers and miners, and being a real girly girl have never had any interest with anything military)
