5th Royal Irish Lancers

Post by StewL » Tue Mar 20, 2007 2:26 am

Hello all you good folk on TS

I recently was given some family history for my ex's side, her mothers line.
Unfortunately the information is quite succinct and doesnt include any actual dates, or given names, only Grandma/Grandpa Fisher.
As I am not sure how far I would like to go on this line, this is more a matter of interest, okay maybe a bit of nosiness too

My ex's aunt mentions that a Victor Fisher was in the 5th Hussars (checked and found to be the 5th Royal Irish Lancers). He was an RSM given a field promotion to Lt, and was mentioned in despatches. He served in the Boer war and was at the siege of Ladysmith/Mafeking. From information I was given previously he must have remained in the Lancers or another regiment after WW1 as my ex's mother was born in Lucknow India in the 1920's?.

He was born in Water, Eire one of 9 children.

What I was really wondering was would there be any information on his service in the TNA, as it appears that he may have spent a fair bit of time in the army.

I checked the RIL website but only a bit about the history of the regiment, and battle honours etc.

I realise this a probably a bit of a wild goose chase and as he appears to be Irish born I am not too confident of finding anything on him. Plus as I previously said I am not sure how far I would like to go with this.

TA! Any thougths are more than welcome.

Hi Stewie,
Have you searched for him on the National Archives site? There seem to be a number of hits on the name, the trick will be to figure out which are the right ones.

All the best,
Sarah

Don't worry that there's no record in the online catalogue at TNA; it hasn't yet got full coverage for this era.

The problem could be if his papers got caught up in the fire in WWII.

Looks like the births would have been in Risalpur!, - see http://www.regiments.org/deploy/uk/reg-cav/d05.htm .

If there is surviving material there's a chance of a parent's name being shown as next-of-kin on his enlistment details, over and above place of birth, occupation, etc.

He should also turn up in the annual Army List (of officers).

Thanks Sarah and David

Sarah

I havent searched the TNA as yet as I have to try and glean out some information from my ex and her mother regarding his possible age/when he was born.

David

Thanks for the information once I get some more information I will have a look at the officers list.

I was going to reply to this yesterday but I had a bit of a "glitch" with my computer it was being temperamental once again.
