Royal Army Medical Corps ?

Hello everyone,
Here I am again already with another military question, you were all so helpful with my first.

I have just received my grandparents 1911 Marriage Entry. My grandfather, Robert Crookston Bird, 21, is listed as "Private, Royal Army Medical Corps" They were married in Dover. On my father's BC in 1915, Gordon Parish, Berwick, he was listed as "private, RAMC reservist & rural postman" I can see from the birth dates of his children, 1914, 1915 and 1919, he might have engaged in some active service? I never met him but I was told when he died in 1973 in Victoria, BC, Canada that his funeral was attended by veterans of WW1. Do these details add up to anything, I could trace? alysone

If you do pay out for the MIC you may find that one of them is entitled to the 1914 or 1914-15 star if he served on the western front.

Isn't the surname BIRD and not CROOKSTON?..........

Hi Pandabean and Jean,
Yes, it is Robert Crookston Bird I am tracking. The Robert Crookstons may well be relatives but it is my grandpa I am after.
I could try and figure out how to post to the gallery both the 2 index cards I found for my great uncles yesterday (with all your help

)? I would be happy to have advice on what all the code re their medals means? alysone

Thanks for that Jean. I have been staring at the laptop all day doing an essay and my brain has went to mush a bit.

Anyways I did another look for a Robert Bird and a Robert C Bird but there was no MIC for a private. However I did find him when I entered Medical in the extra field. Seems he got a promotion to Temporary Serjeant. Also his middle name is Crookster, not Crookston, which could easily be a mistake.

As well as this his service number is quite low, which to me suggests he was involved early in the war and you may find that on his MIC it has 1914-15 star if he was abroad in those years.

Had a wee look around for the 12th Stationary Hospital and these are the details from the Long long Trail on the list of Hospitals on the Front. It is more than likely that he was in one of these places when he was serving abroad. Hopefully the MIC may tell us when he went abroad as sometimes it mentions the date when the soldier entered service and what theatre.

No 12 Stationary
Rouen Feb 1915 - May 1916
St Pol Jun 1916 - Jun 1919

No probs Alysone.

Looks like he was in service from the 27/[3 or 5 or 8]/14 (if you stare at it long enough

) suggesting that he went to the front when the 12th Stationary Hospital was set up around Feb 1915. I am not sure what the remark means 20/1/54.

He was entitled to the 14 Star, BWM and VM. Do you know where they are at all? If so it can 100% prove that the MIC is for your grandfather. But i am pretty sure that the MIC is for your grandfather anyway, it just helps to prove it in some way.

I wish I knew where his medals were but I don't. Sadly, My father (RCB's son) died when I was small and I have no vestige of his family. I am slowly beginning to piece together some sense of them. Could any regimental pictures exist anywhere?
I am still processing what it must have been like, 4 years in France in one of those hospitals. Ah well, it is good to know these things. alysone

Pictures?, - near certainly, - but where, - ask the question on The Great War DG. I'd suspect that there's an RAMC museum somewhere ..........

Ditto re his medals, - you'll find at least one person on TGW DG that will add your details to a list that he circulates in terms of such "missing" medals.
