James Sinclair Tailor

Post by NigelBurch » Sun May 27, 2007 10:34 am

Hello
I'm looking for some leads on James and Janet/Jannet/Jennet Sinclair originally from Scotland but by 1841 census were in Woolwich, England. James was a tailor. They were both born around 1787-1791. They had (at least) three children. James b c1808 (Scotland), Janet b1822 (Woolwich) Elizabeth b 1822-1826 (Woolwich). James junior was in the army (as he is living with his presumably widowed mother in 1851 England census listed as Chelsea pensioner) and I have found someone matching his description was in 91st Foot Regiment and originated from Canongate, Edinburgh and giving his occupation as tailor.
So that is why I am guessing Edinburgh for his parents. I also had a look on ScotlandsPeople and found two matches - 1st match - Janet White and James Sinclair in Leith South (profession of James either a 'Sailor' or 'Tailor' but it looks more like Sailor and given Leith's proximity to docks it is more likely to be that?). Janet White was daughter of Robert White, Sailor
The second match I have is James Sinclair and Janet Duncan (does not quote profession of Tailor but lists Inverness Militia - could his profession also be Tailor) but gives location of Canongate which would match up with where James Junior was born. Janet Duncan was daughter of William Duncan, Weaver which again is associated with the clothing trade.

Anybody knows whether the recruitment for Inverness, Banff, Elgin and Nairn Militia was restricted to those areas or whether it was throughout other parts of Scotland. I guess he would have enlisted 1803-1805.

If you can piece this together to provide any leads or proof to tie up the facts I have with the people/assumptions I have discovered, then it is appreciated. Also, as there is a 14 year gap between the children's births then there may be missing children I am not aware of. Regards.

Hi,

Welcome to TalkingScot.

I am not sure if I can help you much with this query. You probably know of this website (below)already. I did find this about the 91st Regiment of Foot, also known as the Argyllshire Highlanders.

Hope someone can help you in more detail. :)

Also seems they were in England around the start of the 1800s.

History of the Regiment.
