Could he have joined the army?

I am having trouble with tracing another of my ancestors.

My gt grandfather`s son, GEORGE NELSON GRANT born 1870 in Litchurch Derby.
Was in 1881 in an Industrial School (Fechney) in Perth Scotland, I have tried unsuccesfully to obtain his record, these have not survived. So I do not know why he was there or when he was discharged.

As he disappeared after this time, I now wonder if he would have joined the army when he left the school, and may have ended up in India, I do know there was a relative there, who I think married and had children.However,
I know so little about my family, never having had any questions answered, any little bits of info I have, were acquired mostly by eavesdropping on my mother`s conversations!

What steps can I take to find out if he did join the army, and whether this would have been in a Scottish regiment or not, also, how can I trace if he did end up in India.
I do not have a clue as to where I can make a start

You need to get a specialist Kew military records researcher to have an initial look at the military records held at The National Archives.

Given your man's age, it would seem to me quite possible that he was involved in the Boer War, so not traceable in the 1901 census as a result

Possible also that he enlisted at, say, the age of 16+, and served in various overseas locations.

The 1881 presence in an Industrial School in Perth is no guarantee that any subsequent military service would necessarily have involved a Scottish regiment.........
