Victoria Cross - search for families

Post by fmackay » Mon Jun 18, 2007 8:51 am

This was sent to me and thought it might be of interest.
Arthur Henderson is a distant relative of mine but I was unable to help with the search for descendants. I have contact details if it's of any interest to anyone.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"On the 150th Anniversary of the first Victoria Crosses being awarded for
bravery, a memorial service will take place at Paisley Abbey on Tuesday 26
June to honour 5 Victoria Cross recipients from Renfrewshire. The Council
and Co-op Funeral Care are still trying to trace the families of 2 of the
men so that they can be represented at the service. We are sending the
following details to staff in the hope that perhaps one of you may be
related to these men, or may know of someone who is.

Captain Arthur Henderson (6 May 1893 - 24 April 1917), born in Paisley, son
of Baillie George Henderson. Captain Henderson had a brother who also died
during the First World War and a sister Agnes who survived them both and
moved to Yeovil in Somerset. As far as we know, neither brother had any
children.

Private Samuel Evans (also spelt Evens) (1821 - 1901), born to James and
Anne Evens in Paisley in 1821, and fought in the Crimean War. Private Evans
survived the war and married Margaret McNicholl in Edinburgh in 1856. They
moved to the Dumfries area and he worked as a greengrocer for a time. As
far as we know, he and his wife did not have any children. His wife died in
1899 and Private Evans died in 1901."

Hi Fiona
I do hope someone recognises Captain Arthur Henderson or Private Samuel Evans even if it is a bit short-notice at this late stage. It would be great to think that modern technology and TS had played a part in someone being there to represent them.

Best wishes
Lesley

Hi Lesley
They haven't been able to trace any direct descendants of Arthur, however 4 members of my family are going to be there. The connection is through a second marriage of Arthurs great grandfather so that will be good. I would've loved to have gone but not able to get the time off work. My cousins are looking forward to the day.
