Try as I might I cannot find my Great Grandmas Date of Birth, she gave birth to my Grandma in the poor house in KKBD Scotland in 1890 have even got a record of the governors name, but have spoken to the Archives in Dumfries shire but they couldn't find her and as there were so many of the same name in Kirkcudbright area it is difficult to go onto the family line would appreciate any help you could give me. Hi Jo-an

What was your Grandma's name - if you could then find her in the 1891 cencus and if she was with her mum then that would give you an idea of a place and approx year of birth for your great grandma.

Susan.

Hi Jo-an,
Welcome to Talking Scot! [talkingscot]

As Susan said, if you know your grandmother's birth name, she should presumably be with her mother in 1891. Or, if not, do you know the name of your great grandmother? If you give us more details, someone on the forum may be able to find her on the census and go from there.

All the best,
Sarah

My Grandmas name was mabel Anna have tried to find her in the 91 census (she was born in 1890 in the Workhouse in KKBD) My Great Grandma was called Jane but they didn't list how old she was when she had my grandma, and as there are a few jane Kennans about not quite sure which one it was. Many thanks for your thoughts and Ideas on this. in the 1901 census my grandma lived with a family called wallace, and did wondermy great grandmas had been mary jane Kennan cos there was one born in Borgue who worked for a wallace family in glasgow who were also born in Borgue. Trying to make had or tail of it seems like a bit of a coincidence, does this make sense Regards Jo-an

Hi Jo-an,

All I can tell you so far is where they were not on the night of the 1891 census - Kircudbright Combination Poorhouse. The poorhouse had the governor and his family, plus 26 "patients". None are likely candidates for mis-spelled Mabel Anna or Jane Kennan.

All the best,

AndrewP

Grandma Mabel Annie Kennan was Married to John McSkimming 1911 in Twyholm Her mothers name on MC is Jane Kennan and this 81 census was in glasgow for mary Jane, My uncle who believe it or not is still alive tells me she was brought up with the wallaces and she was born in the workhouse at kkbd She also had a son James (My Great Grandma this is) James Kennan, born 1884 however it says mother unknown on his marriage certificate, The only Jane Kennan I can find in district has a jannet Kennan listed as her mother but believe it was spelt as Janet, Hope you can unravel all this Regards Jo-an
