138, Garngadhill.....

Post by Cathy » Tue Sep 13, 2005 12:42 pm

Hi All,
I have an 1871 death at 138, Garngadhill, District of High Church, Glasgow.
The informant was an inmate. Does anyone know what sort of institution this was?

Hi Cathy

You could try the census if the date of death is later, but that wouldn't necessarily help. After similar queries from many people, the subject was taken up by the ScotlandsPeople User Group, and a free facility to look at the first few pages of the enumeration book was added a year or more ago after paying to view a page. This allowed the institution involved to be identified, as well as showing the detailed description of the area covered by the enumeration district involved.

For some reason, at the site "upgrade" at the end of May, this facility disappeared. At the last User Group meeting we were promised that this facility would be restored, hopefully in the near future ..........

In the meantime I'll have a look at that address in 1881 ...... and get back later........

David

Later No entry in 1881 for "138 Garngadhill", and no other address in Garngadhill that is an institution of some sort.

http://www.roystonroadproject.org/archi ... oyston.htm , and http://www.rls.org.uk/database/record.p ... chdb=scran , may, however, provide a clue .........

Hi Cathy and David,

Garngardhill was later re-named Roystonhill, and 138 was possibly the private institution Garngard House.

The Glasgow Story has a map & a photo that shows an institution in Garngadhill.
(the road starts near the bottom left hand corner of the map)

Hi David,
thanks for reply. Interesting site. It gives a real insight into the sort of employment in the area.

Hi Jack,
you are probably right about the asylum. Tho' cause of death was old age and bronchitis. Am I right in thinking that not all asylums were of the lunatic variety? I'm not decrying these. I probably read it somewhere, that genteel people went to asylums to convalesce.

Hi Cathy,

My GGGrandfather died in 1907 in Barnhill Poorhouse. According to his death certificate, the district was Garngadhill. I hope this helps rather than confuses.

Hello Cathy,

Just because the informant was an inmate does not necessarily mean the place of death was an institution. It could have been anyone who lived with them.

I have a few 'inmate informants' who definitely lived at a private address and, in my cases, were also related to the deceased.

Hi Nancy,
I have an 1895 birth at Barnhill Poorhouse, District of Dennistoun.

Hi Carole,
confused? Me? My brain turned to mush a long time ago.

Hi Annette,
something else to think about.

Thank you all.

Hi Cathy,

I think i've got the 'institution'; 1871 census 644-2 Ed 16 pp 1-5;

138 Garngadhill.
Little Sisters of the Poor Home for Aged Infirm. About 4½ pages of residents.
--
116 Garngadhill.
Garngad House, Lunatic Asylum. Must've been quite small - just over a page of residents.

Thank goodnes for that Jack - it was driving me crazy.

On the Glasgow valuation rolls the numbers jump from 134 to 140 as on the 1881 census.
The asylum is clearly marked on an old Glasgow map on Gargand Hill north of the Necropolis. Looks quite big to me.
