Hello Cathy,
Looks like you are in luck after all.
I don't know where I was looking ( or should that be wasn't looking) but thanks to our resident Guru of The Mitchell, Jack, Joette will find 2 application.
He has noted the reference numbers:
D-HEW 16/1/4. page 1089. Applied 1900. Marion (Bell) Murray (73). Born Glasserton.
D-HEW 16/5/6. page 1637. Applied 1903. Marion (Murray) Bell (76). Born Whithorn.
If Joette doesn't manage I will look myself next time.
Thanks Jack!
Regards,
Annette M

Hello Cathy and Joette,
I was at The Mitchell today and roughly transcribed the application.

It was noted that David and Andrew were twins.

In present house 14 days
Prior Liberton with daughter Margt McLean 8 months
Prior 155 Wellfield St Glasgow 8 years
At husband’s death in October 1899 she only got £2 - 7/- from Prudential Society
I would recommend that the Poor house be offered as a /? as family should be able to keep her.
29.11.1900 Wrote to Hugh, David, Mary and Margaret as follows
“Your mother above named has applied to his PARISH for relief ???????that her family might and ought to, with a little effort keep her off the parish. I shall thank you to state by return what you are prepared to do.
2.12.1900 Letter from Margaret - husband is willing to give 1/- weekly altho’ earning a small wage.
Her address is 29 Milton St Partick
3.12.1900 Letter from Hugh in which he expresses in his opinion that there was no need for his mother applying for relief and that so far as he was concerned she is at liberty to come and stay with him again.
24.12.00 Poorhouse and charge family
I've really only mentioned Hugh in the second application as there was an address for him. Margaret inferred that Hugh had not kept their mother for long after she applied a year ago. The rest of the family details were pretty much the same.
D-HEW 16/5/6 page 1637
Second application made by son in law McKaill? who she is living with at 89 Sringburn road
9.1.1903 Senile debility
The inspector once again wrote to the family.
Hugh - E. Crawford St. Greenock
Letter from Margaret McLean says she has been supporting her mother for 9 months and that others can do their part now
3rd Feb died in poorhouse.
Any questions just ask.
Kind regards,
Annette M
