Had a look at the index today Cathy and could not find an application.
Maybe Joette will have more luck.

Hello Cathy,

Looks like you are in luck after all. :D

I don't know where I was looking ( or should that be wasn't looking) but thanks to our resident Guru of The Mitchell, Jack, Joette will find 2 application.
He has noted the reference numbers:
D-HEW 16/1/4. page 1089. Applied 1900. Marion (Bell) Murray (73). Born Glasserton.
D-HEW 16/5/6. page 1637. Applied 1903. Marion (Murray) Bell (76). Born Whithorn.

If Joette doesn't manage I will look myself next time.

Thanks Jack!

Regards,
Annette M

Hello Cathy and Joette,

I was at The Mitchell today and roughly transcribed the application.

D-HEW 16/1/4 Page 1089
Widow William Murray Marion Bell
67 Port? Street
Applied - 20/11/00
Born - Glasserton Age 73 Occupation - out door worker
Religion - Prot.
Married 1st June 1852 at Glenluce by Rev. W Mcdowall.
In good health

Parents - John Bell and Marion Pollock both dead

Husband - William Murray born Stoneykirk near Stranraer.died 7.10.99 at Wellfield Street. Labourer, son of John Murray and Elizabeth McCombe ? Both dead.

Children - Hugh 36 born Stranraer m & 7 children
David 31 born Stranraer m and 7 children Gen Labourer resides Fisher Street Stranraer
Andrew 31 b Stranraer single labourer Left Wishaw where he had been employed as a van man about 4 or 5 months ago to go to England doesn’t know where.
It was noted that David and Andrew were twins.
Alexander 40 b Inch m and 8 children miner in Alabama
James 35 years m 5 children miner in Colorado
Mary 39 years b Stranraer m 3 to Jas. McKarl ? Labourer in Hydepark loco works 17/- foreman McNab
Elizabeth 37 b Stranraer m 7 ch to Alec McDowall Policeman at above
Margaret 29 b Stranraer m 7 ch to And Mclean Lab. 29 Sawmill Road
Previously supported by own efforts and family

In present house 14 days
Prior Liberton with daughter Margt McLean 8 months
Prior 155 Wellfield St Glasgow 8 years

At husband’s death in October 1899 she only got £2 - 7/- from Prudential Society
I would recommend that the Poor house be offered as a /? as family should be able to keep her.

29.11.1900 Wrote to Hugh, David, Mary and Margaret as follows
“Your mother above named has applied to his PARISH for relief ???????that her family might and ought to, with a little effort keep her off the parish. I shall thank you to state by return what you are prepared to do.

2.12.1900 Letter from Margaret - husband is willing to give 1/- weekly altho’ earning a small wage.
Her address is 29 Milton St Partick

3.12.1900 Letter from Hugh in which he expresses in his opinion that there was no need for his mother applying for relief and that so far as he was concerned she is at liberty to come and stay with him again.

24.12.00 Poorhouse and charge family

I've really only mentioned Hugh in the second application as there was an address for him. Margaret inferred that Hugh had not kept their mother for long after she applied a year ago. The rest of the family details were pretty much the same.
D-HEW 16/5/6 page 1637
Second application made by son in law McKaill? who she is living with at 89 Sringburn road
9.1.1903 Senile debility

The inspector once again wrote to the family.

Hugh - E. Crawford St. Greenock

Letter from Margaret McLean says she has been supporting her mother for 9 months and that others can do their part now

3rd Feb died in poorhouse.

Any questions just ask.

Kind regards,
Annette M

Hi Annette,
many, many thanks. This should keep me busy for a while.
Imagine in this day and age shopping for Christmas pressies for that amount of grandchildren, and most likely even more before they had finished. I must be related to someone on this site!
Thanks again.
