Agnes Mcnaught.....

Post by maggie » Mon Apr 24, 2006 11:10 am

hello
can anyone please do a look up in the poor relief records for a
Agnes Mcnaught.
I have found a death cert for Agnes in 1856 which gives her age as 79 and a widow (no name of husband) in the district of Abbey Landward. Parents are named as Arthur Mckenzie & Agnes ms Lang
On contacting Paisley cemetry i found she was buried in common ground so a pauper??
If there was a mention of her in the poor relief I'd be hoping that there was further clues to be gleaned that could tie her in for me.
Like the wife of James Mcnaught .
kind regards
maggie

Hi Maggie,

I will have a look at The Mitchell but you might be better getting in touch with Paisley Library.

I'm sure you know that there is only this one marriage of an Agnes McKenzie to any McNaught on the IGI.

AGNES MCKENZIE

Spouse: JAMES MCNAUGHT
Marriage: 14 JUL 1797 Dumbarton, Dunbarton, Scotland

Hi Maggie,
As Annette wisely suggests, contact Local Studies at the Paisley Reference Library (link shortened to TinyURL because of length).
http://tinyurl.com/knpew
Just give all that you know; names, ages, places, dates etc.
The very helpful staff will check the indexes, but please don't build up your hopes too much.
Many of mine are buried in Common Ground. Although they couldn't afford family lairs, they managed to avoid applying for Poor Relief.

Jack
ps, If this Agnes had children, then their DCs might have her hubby's name?
And it might be useful finding her in the 1841 & 1851 censuses.
Who was the informant on Agnes' 1856 DC? Did it give hubby's occupation?
--
There does seem to be a Dumbarton connection - Agnes' parents were married there.

Hello Jack
thankyou for your message
yes i will give that one a try (Annette's Suggestion)
Thankyou for the link.
the informant was James Mcnaught son .
the 1851 census shows who i think is her age 74 in Bonhill
but no image is available.
on a print out i have of Mcnaughts i have for 1851 Bonhill

James Mcnaught age 76 ward 394 8 13 8
Agnes Mcnaught age 74 " " " " "

I have a copy of the 1841 census
that shows James along with his son Arthur ,but no sign of Agnes

i got these from GWFHS (i think)

Arthur the son was married to Mary Yuille but died before 1855.

kind regards maggie

Hello Maggie,

I had a look for an application when I was at The Mitchell today but there was nothing there for Agnes.

Hi Maggie,
Still can't see Agnes in 1841, but here's that 1851 census; as per usual, found in a notebook....

Hello Jack
thankyou for the census info i have just had a look for the gardner children nothing stands out as possibles at the moment on the 1861 census or death certs .I have had a look on the IGI for marriages for the
3 daughters marrying a somebody Gardner names i have for them are Elizabeth,Margaret & Agnes (that's the daughters of James Mcnaught & Agnes McKenzie) and again at the moment nothing stands out .
If note James & Agnes are recorded as paupers in the 1851 so obviously no record of them survives in the poor relief roll otherwise the lady who answered me from the local studies library would have found it :?:

As for the Mckinnie name i really don't know what to think
I got the Mckenzie surname from the poor relief record for Mary Yuill widow of Arthur Mcnaught that gave his parents as being Agnes McKenzie & James Mcnaught.could Mckinnie& McKenzie be interchangeable :?: they do sound alike.
thanks once again Jack
kind regards maggie

Hi Maggie,
I don't know if this 1841 census helps any (the 1851 added again to see them together).
Can't see the GARDNER parents in Glasgow or DNB in 1851.
Have they died? and that's why the 3 children are with their gr-parents?

(a pity this Jean McNaughton aged 60 wasn't as Agnes....)

(can't see this James & Agnes McNAUGHT together in Bonhill (or anywhere else in DNB) 1841,
the only James of abt the right age is the one you already have - ie James (60), with Arthur (20)

I'll need to leave it - mind grinding to a halt...!
