Back from my travels.

Had an amazing time and found out lots of info re the family in the ANEFHS and in the areas visited.
Hi Ellen

Highlight of the grand tour was having tea and cake in the cottage at Faebuie where William Fraser and his wife Isabella Cameron and their family lived in 1861! (Willliam b 1809 and Isabella b 1813)

We expected (if anything) to find a ruined cottage. But there it was and occupied! To cut a long story short we were invited in and the people there were fascinated to know the history of their cottage.

Shame you haven't found a home for wee Jane McBain.

The Frasers and McDonalds at these cottages in Faebuie are all inter related. It'll take me months to sort out who's who. But what a challenge.

Delighted you had such a good time. How fantastic to find the cottage intact and occupied.

Sorry not made much progress yet. I'll have a further go next week - I'm off up to Scotland myself tomorrow - to go to the Scotland Wales Rugby international on Sunday, so doubt if I'll be allowed to sneak away for family history delving!

I've had a big breakthrough on my Harris MacDonalds tonight and found my whole lost generation, traipsing up and down the Western Isles over a period of 40 years, so a very happy bunny. :D

Regards

Ellen.

Jane McBain

Post by Jean Jeanie » Mon Mar 14, 2005 1:26 pm

Hi ellen

When I visited the ANEFHS I took copies of all the censuses for Faebuie Cottages from 1841 -1871. There are only 7 cottages with that address. I was hoping that when I studied them in greater depth that I would uncover a McBain lurking somewhere. Alas no. More Frasers marrying (or not as the case may be) with the McDonalds. Only 7 cottages and the number of different Frasers and McDonalds is unbelievable.

Keep on searching!

Ellen

MINI BREAK THROUGH!!

On the 1851 and 1861 censuses I have found another child, John Fraser, parents William Fraser and Isabella Cameron.

Wee Jane McBain was found in the 1891 and 1901 censuses living with Euphemia Fraser. Euphemia Fraser's(maiden name Grubb) husband was James Fraser, son of William Fraser and Isabella Cameron.

Therefore James and John Fraser are brothers.

Are you keeping up?

I looked for John Fraser in the 1881 census on SP and Voila! I have him and his wife and family living in 16 Petty St Close Inverness.

If I remember correctly you have the discs for the 1881 census so you can find them:-

Source: FHL Film 0203420 GRO Ref Volume 098 EnumDist 3 Page 36

His wife is shown as Jessie Fraser. I found the birth of their son Alexander on the IGI and their marriage. Her maiden name is MCBAIN. The marriage falls into the stat records(1873)

I now have the marriage cert from SP. Her parents are George McBain, Carpenter, deceased. and Helen McBain, deceased(no maiden name shown) Her address at the time of the marriage is FAEBUIE. She is aged 21.

Therefore wee Jane McBain is living with John Fraser's sister in law, Euphemia Fraser. Could wee Jane's mother (Elsie McBain) be a sister of Jessie McBain (John Fraser's wife)

Does this tie up with anything you have?

Hi Jean

Not much progress I'm afraid.

I've found my Elsie's family in 1891. Have moved from Balvattan to Alvie (just south of Aviemore) where dad William is now working on the railway and is widowed. He has young Marjory, James and another child I hadn't known about, Isabella, now 10 yrs, living with him.

Still haven't actually connected this lot to my family.

I guess the good news from wee Jane's point of view is that Elsie, who should now be approx 17 yrs is not at home, so is still a contender for Jane's mum, albeit she would have been very young to have had her in 1888.

Cheers

Ellen.

We now have a connection with the railway! John Fraser's other brother, Alexander, worked on the railways. I have him and his family at Aviemore Station in the 1891 census and Station Cottages Carrbridge in the 1901 census.

I wish I knew where John Fraser and Jessie McBain went between 1881 and 1891. Tried the Ellis Island site - no joy there.

Wee Jane is still on the scanner!

Hi ellen

Bit of un update.

I now have Ann McDonald (m.s. Fraser) sister of Alexander, John and James. In 1881 the McDonalds lived at Easter Gallovie. In 1891 they lived at Croft Dow. In 1901 at Skye of Curr. I presume you have a an OS map of Grantown an Aviemore. If not take a look at multimap. Easter Gallovie, Croft Dow and Balvattan are all within spitting distance of each other. In fact on the 1891 census Croft Dow appears on the same page as a cottage in Balvattan.

The McBains at Balvattan, if not related to the Frasers, must have known each other, at least.

I have found John Fraser and Jessie McBain in 1891 in Inverness City. No help there re McBain.

Back to the point there all this started. In 1891 wee Jane McBain aged 2 is "boarding" with Euphemia Fraser, who is the wife of James Fraser.

Will we ever find the connection :?

Hi Jean

Round and round and round we go!!

I'm transcribing Duthil & Rothiemurcus 1841 for Freecen just now, and have a Helen Fraser age 20 as a servant to a family of MacGregors at Easter Gallovie.
Next door at Mid Gallovie, there is a family of MacBains.

You will see close to Croft Dow, Balvattan and Easter Gallovie, the farms of Balnacruie and Croft James which is where most of my paternal line are to be found. Mostly Grants and MacIntoshes, but Isabella McBean/McBain married into the Grants.

Will let you know if I turn up anything else.

Cheers

Ellen.

It really is a small world.

Having just found my Ann McDonald(m.s. Fraser) in Croft Dow in 1891. I looked at the census again after reading your latest post. The entry above Croft Dow is Croft James - Ann Grant and Jessie Rose in one and a family of McIntoshes in the other. The entry above Croft James is Balnacruie and there we have the Grants.

There is an Elsie Fraser, aged 8, at Croft James, grandaughter of Elisa McIntosh - hmmmmmm I wonder who she is?
