Cotton PLW?

Post by KateW » Mon Oct 01, 2007 8:36 pm

I have a copy of the 1841 Census for Old Machar, Aberdeen and on it found James Ross age 15 occupation Cotton PLW. Does anyone know what PLW stands for? The head of household was a Blacksmith but it doesn't sound connected to that occupation! I'd be grateful if anyone could make a suggestion. :)

Thanks,
KateW

Hi Kate,
Could it be Cotton HLW? I've seen plenty of those: Cotton Hand Loom Weaver. Maybe someone made some extra ornate capital letters...

All the best,
Sarah

Hi Kate,

It's most likely Power Loom Weaver. (If it's definitely a P)

Cheers,

Merlot

If the dishes are finished :D , you can have a read at http://www.talkingscot.com/censuses/census-1841.htm

That shows the list of abbreviations that the enumerators were supposed to use in 1841.

All the best,

AndrewP

Thanks, Andrew :D
But if I'm going to really leave for Scotland tomorrow  I'll have to do a wee bit more packing... Never am ready until the last minute :!:

Sarah

Thanks Sarah, Merlot and Andrew,

I have had a look at the link to the census page and found PLW (and a few other abbreviations that look useful :D )
This site is full of interesting and useful info... I need to search further to discover more :!:
Hope you have a good trip to Scotland, Sarah.
