I have an ancestor who was a teacher in Ayrshire around the time of the 1841 census. Does anyone know how he would he have come to such a job, and might there be any training records? The census doesn't specify what kind of teacher, though another relative was a 'technical teacher'.
Thanks

Hi mikokunsaki,
I have a couple of teachers around that time also...I would assume they knew their catechism well along with a decent knowledge of the 3 R's, but until someone else comes along with a better answer, take a look at the following link (click on the full text).

Hi
I guess that this probably does not take you any further but I did get a brief glimpse into the life of my ancestor who was a schoolmaster in Inverchaolain until his death in 1842.
In the second statistical account for that parish the minister writes something along the lines of "The school master has recently died. He was a very worthy man but lived in great poverty."
Whatever else there may have been in teaching in those days there was certainly no money in it.
Have you had a look at the statistical account for the parish your ancestor lived in. He might get a mention.
