Occupation = Dource?

Post by Pettigrew » Mon Apr 27, 2009 1:03 pm

My 3rd great grand uncle was Rev Thomas Hislop b 1790 Kirk of Shotts Lanark.
His wife Charlotte is shown on Ancestry 1851 census Charlote Heslop b 1787 her occupation given as Dource. I have looked at various websites but can not find any occupation listed as Dource, can anyone help with this please.
I wonder if this is an Ancestry mistake as on Scotlands People her occupation has been crossed out, and also on Ancestry they have got the town as Bridge of Leith and it should be Bridge of Teith.

Thanking you
Mary

Hi Mary
..and a warm welcome to Talking Scot [talkingscot] :D

From what you've said it sounds like a typical Ancestry mistranscription - we've seen quite a good cross section of them on here. As you have already done, the best thing to do is look at the original census page and see what it says there.
as on Scotlands People her occupation has been crossed out
What does it actually say under the scoring out? Could it possibly be misinterpreted as something along the lines of "Dource"?

Best wishes
Lesley

A Warm Welcome to Talking Scot Mary,

Ancestry are notorious for the odd mistranscriptions that they come up with

I was think along another line though - would Dource [or what ever it should say] be her maiden name?

The reason I ask is, looking through the freecen 1851 census in Shotts quite a few of the wives are down under their maiden surname.

I take it you have the original image from SP? if so you could try loading it on her for the experts to have a look:

Hi Mary,

Welcome to TalkingScot. [scotland-flag]

I didn't come up with anything on "dource" either, but with Ancestry, it could be anything. :)

You could try uploading the SP image and see if anyone can decipher what was crossed out.

Regards,
Anne H

Hello Mary,

Could it be the place of birth, Doune in Perthshire? A Rev Thomas Heslop was a Burgher minister there in 1837.

The closest occupation I could find in occupations was 'dorcas' - seamstress.

Nothing listed in the Dictionary of Scots Language, The Gazeteer of Scotland and no entries on SP for 'dource'

Hi Mary,

One possibility is that it does say Doune, and that could be a continuation of her husband's occupation - Free Church Minister <strike>Doune</strike>. The only way to be sure is to see the original census book or a coloured scan of it. The line drawn through that word will be in coloured pencil, probably blue or red, and should be able to be seen through in a look at the book or a coloured scan of it. You could try submitting a ScotlandsPeople contact form asking for a coloured scan of it , saying that part of the image is unreadable in its black and white online image.

All the best,

AndrewP

Wow what a wonderful website.

Thank you for all the replies, I have followed the instructions to place an image on the gallery, I have named it 1851 Census Thomas and Charlotte Hislop, and it worked!
Looking at it again it may have been entered as Doune and then crossed out

http://talkingscot.com/gallery/displayi ... ?pos=-1832

A bit of the family history,
Rev Thomas Hislop, b Kirk Of Shotts 1790 died 1879 Doune he was the minister of Doune Fore Church, Bridge of Teith Kilmadock from 1823-1871, 1824 he married Charlotte Murdock at Kilmadock and 1843 he signed the Act of Separation and Deed of Demission 1843, Thomas and Charlotte had no children, his father was-

Rev Ebenezer Hislop (my 4th great grandfather) b Peebles 1745 died Doune 1831 he was the minister of Shottsburn Church Shotts Lanark, married to-

1st marriage Janet Landle 1831 Wemyss 6 children, John b1781, David b1787, Ebenezer b 1790, Thomas b 1791, Allison b 1791 (my 3rd great grandmother who married William Pettigrew 1812 New Monkland) and Janet b 1796 all children born in Shotts.

2nd marriage Christine Farnie 1796 Edinburgh, one child Robina b 1799 Shotts.

3rd marriage Margaret Neisbet 1811 Dalkeith 2 children Margaret Brown b 1812 and Elizabeth b 1814 both born Dalkeith.

4th marriage Helen Nimms 1818 Dalkeith, no children.

I have copies of both Thomas’s and Ebenezer’s will’s which I found fascinating.

I hope you don’t mind me adding this extra information onto my query, but I have viewed this site for so long and only now have plucked up courage to ask a question. I am sure more of my questions will follow.

Once again thank you all.

Mary
