What is a 'Hostler'

My ancestor on most census states engineer, engine keeper and the Death Certificate states Hostler???
Could I have the wrong one?? :oops:

Hi Kay,
Click on the Sources tab at the top of this page, then go to Old Occupations in Scotland list. You'll see that a Hostler is a " person looking after horses at an inn". Now whether that's your man or not, I can't say... Some people did change occupations. How certain are you from the other facts?

It was Thomas's (the engine keeper) father William who was the hostler Kay.
