Belvidere Hospital Glasgow

Post by crayspond » Wed May 06, 2009 8:48 pm

Hi to all at TS,

I wonder if anyone knows if it is possible to find out about Nurses c 1920?
My grandmother was a nurse in Belvidere hospital, which was an infectious disease hospital at the time, her sister was also a nurse but i am not sure which hospital she was in. My grandmother was born in 1903. I would love to see some old photos of staff at that time. Anyone any ideas?

Hi all,

Just to let you know i had a quick response from the archives site see below

Dear Ailsa

Thank you for your enquiry. I suggest that you contact the National Archives of Scotland to access the published registers of nurses which were produced by the General Nursing Council for Scotland:

Email: enquiries@nas.gov.uk

Telephone: 0131 535 1314

This will enable you to pinpoint your grandmother's qualification date. You are welcome to then contact us again if you would still like us to look for any additional information.

Best wishes

Hi Ailsa,

By sheer co-incidence I came across a gravestone in Sandymount Cemetery the other day commemorating nurses and other 'ranks' from Belvidere. Why these individuals would be (I presume) all buried in that or surrounding plots - I don't know.

The inscription reads:

"Belivdere Hospital The Lord Provost and Council in memory of
ALICE JANE NORRIS, Nurse, died 31st January 1887 aged 26 years
ANNIE TRAINER, Nurse, died 30th March 1890 aged 46 years
ELLEN MILLER, Ward-Maid died 30th June 1891 aged 51 years
ADA CARMAN, Nurse, died 27th December 1895 aged 28? Years
JANE NEIL McGARROCH, Nurse, died 2nd January 1896 aged 29 years
HENRIETTA ROGERS, Nurse, died 14th May 1903 aged 25 years
MARGARET MacGREGOR, Ward-Maid, died 3rd March 1907 aged 25 years
JANET H. DONALDSON, Nurse, died 22nd November 1907 aged 21 years
MARGARET McGUIRE, Laundry-Maid died 2nd January 1911 aged 68 years
MARY McLEOD PATERSON, Nurse, died 17th January 1918 aged 20 years
AMELIA SINCLAIR, Matron, died 20th March 1921 aged 90 years
ANNIE A. LAURIE, Sister, died 2nd February 1927 aged 62 years
MARY BUCHANAN, Sister, died 18th April 1931

Hi Anne,

That is an interesting gravestone to come upon. I wonder why they were all mentioned - unless they all died while working/living at the hospital. If i find any more out i will let you know on this post.
Thanks for posting.
