What was a "Retort Setter"?

Post by q98 » Tue Jan 11, 2011 3:16 am

A 1905 newspaper report described a relative as a "Retort Setter" and further stated he recently completed a "new double retort bench of his own design for the Newton-On-Ayr Gas Company. The bench is intended for six double ovens of six retorts each." What was a (gas) "Retort Setter"?
