SAWMILLS IN NEWKILPATRICK.....

Post by rosie » Sun Nov 06, 2005 11:19 pm

hi everybody :D

i,m new to the site

ive been looking at my family history on clark and i came across the 1881 census for my ancestors and it states that the head robert clark was a sawmill labourer and that he along with his family and some boarders resided at TEMPLE SAWMILLS / NEWKILPATRICK DUMBARTON. :?

has anybody got any info on any sawmills that exsisted then, and would people have lived in sawmills then or could there have been housing attached.

any info would be much appreciated :)

Hi Rosie

Hope you're enjoying your stay here at TalkingScot :D ! We're glad you joined up!

I don't have any info specifically about the Temple Saw Mills in New Kilpatrick....but I do know that there are a total of 13 groups/families with the same address as your Clark household....one of which happens to be Unihabited. Sure sounds to me like it was special housing for the employees.....

Best wishes
Jean

Hi Temple is now in the Glasgow area. The company was Robinson & Dunn & there are Archives at Glasgow University for the Company- what they have I am not sure but if you Google Temple Sawmills Glasgow you should get a result.
This area would have been Farmland but with the rapid growth of the Shipbuilding & related industries in the area & the outspilling of population I guess that like many employers they decided to provide housing fro their employees. If it was new build they could also provide the wood themselves- a neat profit making proposition.

Hi Rosie,

One of my ancestors worked in a sawmills in Crathie and the 1881 census records him and several others in a bothy attached to the sawmill. So far as I know it was quite common, certainly for single men, but no doubt for families too.
