What was a Revenue Officer?.....

Post by joette » Wed Dec 14, 2005 6:43 pm

All i keep getting are people protesting paying their Taxes(I would too but they are a neccesary evil).
What I would like to know is what a Revenue Officer in the late 1800's would do? I presume not collecting taxes & I cant imagine much smuggling going on around Penicuik circa 1890' or maybe there was a brisk trade in illicit coal/paper!
Anybody steer me to the fount of knowledge please?

The TNA brochure at http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/cata ... ri2145.htm will give you an oversight...........

A revenue officer would have worked for Customs & Excise:

Customs: - Duties or taxes imposed on imported and, less commonly, exported goods.

Excise: - taxes or governmental levies on specific goods produced and consumed inside a country.

If you can't find anything Joette I would be pleased to make something up for you.If he had worked for the VAT people i could write something without even troubling you with a visit to Kew.

Sorry Malc he is an earlier than Vat man around the late 1800's.
The Vat,tax men are lovely people only doing their jobs! It is the powers that they have I object to. Why should government employees, paid by us have so much clout? I believe they are the only people with the power to enter our homes/workplaces without a Court order(I know the Police can with certain constraints.) I know that they can backdate debts further than you can backdate claims. No fair.
