Greetings All,
I am wondering if there are records of those who served apprenticeships in the early 1900's?
My grandfather (and other members of his family) where staying in Govan at 501 Govan Rd (according to 1901 census). My grandfather said he went through as an "engine fitter", so I am wondering what shipyard he would have worked at, and if there are any records.
note: Grandfathers name was William Parks Rankin and they stayed with his half brother, Robert Anderson.
TIA, regards Ian.

Hello Ian
I have tried to pick up on apprenticeship records for some time and have yet to find what I'm looking for. However, and perhaps fortunately for you, "records of our once great shipbuilding companies have been preserved".
In respect of Glasgow, they are held at Glasgow University Archives and Strathclyde Regional Archives. I should point out that I do not know whether or not these places hold records specific to apprenticeships.
I'm afraid that there are no straight lines to where you want to be in this game but if you enter the above names in the address bar and follow your nose you should come accross an e-mail contact that might be able to help you.
Hoping this helps

Many thanks to David and Malcolm, I kind of thought that this might be the case. My great regret is that I did not pay more attention when my grandfather was alive, the information was there for the asking, but then hindesight is alway 20/20 is it not?
Once again, many thanks. Regards Ian.
