Huter?.....

Post by Debrs » Wed Jun 21, 2006 9:00 pm

Hi,

I've just come across a relation whose occupation looks like " Huters labourer" His neighbour in Edinburgh has the same occupation. Does anyone know what this might have been? I tried to look it up on the internet, but nothing came up on a search.

Here's hoping someone will have an idea! I'd be very interested to hear from anyone!

Hi Debrs
Nothing springs to mind...maybe someone else might have an idea. If not is there any chance you could upload the page to the gallery and we could have a look at it?

Best wishes
Lesley

Hi Debrs

I noticed that there had been no other responses to this post and wondered if you had given up trying to decipher his occupation?
When I first looked my thoughts were 'platers labourer'. Though usually linked to shipbuilding, it has wider applications as an occupation since anyone building boilers, assembling metal bridges, in fact anywhere that two pieces of metal have to be rivetted together would fit.
If you're still stuck try Lesley's suggestion. Post it here so we can all puzzle over it.

Hi debs

I wonder...long shot - does it maybe say Worker, Labourer? Depends how the writing is formed...

Can you tell us which census year it was? Area of Edinburgh, address?
We all want to know what it is now!
Best wishes
Lesley

Thanks everyone!

I've just come online after a while away & found all your replies. It's so great that you all want to help. I want to try to put the census page on the gallery, but can't seem to find out how to do just that! Help!!

Hi Debrs,

Follow instructions as given elsewhere on TalkingScot by Annette (Nelmit).
nelmit wrote:You have to be logged in and then.....
Click on Gallery (above)
Click on upload file
Click browse
This takes you to your computer where you should find the image you want to upload.
Double click on the file.
Click on continue - Your file is now uploaded.
I think you then have to wait for approval from TSAG who will post it in the gallery.

Good luck,
Annette M
Please include the whole census page in its original TIF format as downloaded from ScotlandsPeople. TIF is a good format for these black and white images, and the whole page allows everyone to see other examples of the enumerator's handwriting.

All the best,

Hello again!

Still haven't managed to upload the census page. I seem to have a problem with the file, it keeps telling me an error has occurred ( the story of my computer life so far!) and it can only upload files with a prefix of.........?

Anyway, I've been staring at this page for ages now, and one other occupation on the page is Rubber worker, shoes, and the 's' at the beginning seems to be the same as the beginning of my Huter! Maybe then, it could be slaters labourer?

I'll keep trying to upload the page to the gallery, but failing that, it's a 1901 census, for John Watson aged 43 in Newington, Edinburgh, also his brother George, who is 26.

Thank you to all who have replied, it's great to have all the feedback,

Best wishes, Debbie.

Hello Debbie,

John and George are Slater's labourers. The enumerator did not close the letter 'a' properly, noticeably in Margaret Watson's occupation, which looks like "Puper Bug Muker".

Regards,

John
