STEWARD as an Occupation

Post by elgarvmatt » Tue Sep 05, 2006 8:26 am

Does anyone know of a directory of Stewards? I am looking for a Steward named William Matthewson.
There was a Wm Matthewson, Farm Steward in Roxburgh who died 1841 but I am not sure this is the right person.
Any help gratefully received.
Cheers

Hi Elgar

What information do you already have about your William Mathewson?

Have you tried the local library for a directory? There may not be one that is specifically for Stewards, but worth looking to see if he is mentionned in the general directory for the area where he worked.

Regards

Catriona

Catriona, thanks for the suggestion but the problem is that I have no idea where he worked so I am clutching at straws. All I know about William is that he was a Steward and his son was named George and he was born in 1821 in Scotland. I do not have a County to go on.
I had hoped that the 1841 & 1851 census would reveal all but I have not found either of them.
Cheers

Hope I am not teaching you to suck eggs but have you used name variation/wildcards in your search for either?
Sometimes you have to be creative with the spellings of surnames-eg Mattison,Matheson,Mathieson.?
Researching:SCOTT,Taylor,Young,VEITCH LINLEY,MIDLOTHIAN
WADDELL,ROSS,TORRANCE,GOVAN/DALMUIR/Clackmanannshire
CARR/LEITCH-Scotland,Ireland(County Donegal)
LINLEY/VEITCH-SASK.Canada
ALSO BROWN,MCKIMMIE,MCDOWALL,FRASER.
Greer/Grier,Jenkins/Jankins

Hi Joette, thank you, yes, I am aware of the variations in the name but I am happy to be reminded. It is better to be told twice than not at all.
(George Matthewson married an Emma Jacques so you can imagine the variations in that!)
I have to go back to the census and look again but the cost of Scotland's People is outrageous, especially if one has to pay in GBP from Oz dollars altho it does not cost to view pages a second time - fortunately.
Thanks again, and I have to congratulate everyone on this site. Everyone is so helpful. Talking Scot comes equal first with ancestry24.co.za!
Cheers
