I have a possible ancester who was a Machine MJ. And i was wondering what the MJ stood for

Hi its on the 1841 census in Angus, Powrie Place, Dundee

If it is Dundee, that "J" immediately makes me think Jute... might be wrong though. Will see what I can find. Can you give us the name of your possible ancestor, & age etc so I can maybe go look at the census page? Powrie Place seems to be up the "Hilltoon" in Dundee.

Hi Jeff,

He may have been a machine maker journeyman. See the TalkingScot page regarding the job descriptions that the enumerators were supposed to use for the 1841 census.

Hi all

Thanks for the repiles they are very help full. The name of my ancester was Thomas Galloway born abt1816 in Angus. And was in Powrie Place on the 1841 census. Hope that helps anyone again thank you all :D
