small oil colour shop.....

please can i have your thoughts on what a small oil colour shop could possibly have involved .
on an application for relief i have come accross an entry that say's
has a small oil colour shop with mangle!!!! :? the address for this was
16 Smith street Whiteinch and the year was 1884.thankyou

thanks for your reply Hmm.... his father was a calico printer on one record ,a block printer on another and his grandfather was a block printer so that would make sense.thankyou

I found these old occupations:

Colourman Mixer of dyes in textile trade
Oil Colour Man Employed in the paint manufacturing trade, mixing pigmented paints

What was his occupation on the census before that ?

That end of Glasgow was where a lot of printing done, as far as I'm aware.
