China Clay Mine in Ayrshire

I have it on good authority that there was a china clay mine somewhere in north Ayrshire in the 2nd half of the 19th century, perhaps Renfrewshire .......

This site does mention China Clay and North Ayrshire and other areas, although not in the same sentence…. too much for my brain to comprehend so I didn’t read the entire thing!

Nope......but you'd think that at least one person might have china and clay in their occupation description on the 1881

and the only ones I see are all merchants or shopkeepers.

THere are only 3 china gilders in the whole country and one of them was unemployed

On the other hand....there is no shortage of fire clay miners...mostly in the Cadder area. China mining must have been a shortlived and extremely low profile industry in Scotland. Cornwall seems to take all the glory for the china clay industry.......

Hi David

There certainly was a brick works on the outskirts of Dalry up until about the 1970's.
