Larkhall Cemetery
Hi
I wonder if someone may be able to lookup a monumetal inscription in Larkhall Cemetery for me please?
I am looking for Margaret McNay who was buried on the 18th January 1921.
It is possible that she was buried with her brother Thomas McNay who was buried 22nd January 1943 and her sister Agnes Catherine who was buried 16th February 1931.
Any information about them would be gratefully received.
Many thanks
Phil

Re: Larkhall Cemetery
Hi Phil,
I've found Margaret and Catherine on Larkhall Monumental Inscriptions CD1 (by scottish-monumental-inscriptions) - the inscription is:
Sacred to the memory of Margaret McNay d. 18.1.1921. Agnes Catherine McNay d. 16.2.1931
The stone next to it is Thomas:-
Dr McNay, J.P. ILMO my dear husband Thomas McNay d. at Dalveen, Larkhall 22.1.1943. Also his wife Agnes McNay d. 27.5.1979
Cheers
John

Hi John
I wonder if the transcription for Thomas's headstone may have been misread as he married an "Ann S" not an Agnes. Scotland's People also show the death as Ann McNay in 1979.
Thought it might be of interest.
Many thanks again

Re: Larkhall Cemetery
Phil,
You're right, I'd copied and pasted the transcription from the CD. But looking at the photo, though not of high quality, it does look like it should be Anne S McNay, transcription error. The two stones are side by side and part of each in each photo, with Anne S McNay (note: Anne with an e) in line with Agnes on the other stone, so you can see how they might easily have read the wrong part. Unfortunately the photos are copyright so I can't post them here.

Re: Larkhall Cemetery
This is my first post so I hope I have done this right.
I was wondering if someone could look up a monumental inscription in Larkhall Cemetery. My Great Granny is buried in Larkhall - DIvision 3 Section C50. Unfortunately I don't stay in the area and when I was there in January I tried to look for a gravestone but I couldn't find one. The area where I thought it should be hardly had any gravestones.
I would like to know who else is buried in this grave.
Her name was Margaret Lean Whitelaw (nee Prentice) - wife of Robert Whitelaw. Born 1891, died 28th September 1929 in Calderbank House, Baillieston. Daughter of William Prentice & Janet M Pate.
Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Larkhall Cemetery
Hi Lynn,
I've had a quick look and though there are several stones for Whitelaw and Prentice none are your Margaret. This could mean that the stone was unstable or vandalised so taken down, or indeed there may never have been a stone.
However, you know where the plot is so you could try South Lanarkshire Council follow this link to the Checking Cemetery Records, they may be able to advise who else is buried in the plot.

There's an online form to fill in or if you prefer they give the address and you could write to them.
Good Luck
John
