Hi Margaret,
Another thing i've found in a drafts folder, so sending it on before it gets lost again! Susan gave the nos a while back.
To know if they are possibly "yours" you'd need the 1861 or 1871 census to see if your John was b Neilston & Christina was b Rutherglen.

ps, the 1st 1841 census (with head William 20) that Catriona found does look good.
Janet (40) in 1841 was as born outside Renfrewshire, so this would tie in with her b Dunlop, Ayrshire in 1851.
William was also b outside the County, but the others were in Renfrewshire.

pps, you may have this? might be GG-GF John as a widower (living by himself) in 1881,
just along from your G-GF John that Andy found at no 33.
[was John a carter on William's 1859 BC?]

Hello Jack
Yes on Williams birth cert his dad was a Carter, and yes my John Morton was born in Nielston and my Christina was born in Rutherglen. (this checked out on the 1871 census, I havent checked the 1861 yet ran out of credits :( )
So I say to you a million thanks for all the help you have given me, and at last after many searches my brick wall is coming down row by row.

The Morton Family living at 33 Pomadie Street, are mine also John/ Agnes (second wife) and John age 6 is Agnes's step-son my Grandad, my GrGrandma Mary Mc Donald died at the age of 22 years in 1875.

GGFath John Morton/Christina would have been a widower in 1881 census as
Christina died at the age of 44 in 1874, (I have just got her death cert from Scotlands people) so I am thinking that is him living in Polmadie street to.

Now for the 1851 Census Mortons, they to look like mine so you can see I am smiling one big smile :D having all this wonderful information to write down and get a idea of where they were and what they did.
Cheers

John Morton & Janet Anderson

Post by Jack » Sun Sep 25, 2005 1:54 am

Hi Margaret,
Good, glad they were the right family - i can send this on now; i didn't want to add yet another ps!
They are from the IGI - many are LDS submissions, so if this is your family then someone else has an interest in it.
But the 1851 census has Janet as WRIGHT - maybe re-married sometime between 1841 & 1851?
You'll note that son William was born Dunlop, Ayrshire - consistent with b outside Renfrewshire in 1841, but can't find him in 1851.

Hello there Jack from cloudy aussie, it is 11AM sunday here and I was just thinking how small this world is, that you answered me straight away.
I will print yout our letter and spend a quite afternoon, searching through IGI ect. Just realized that I cant reseach the 1861 census online so will follow up if there a LDS office here in Newcastle that I maybe able to get them there. Yes I have the 1851 census for Janet Wright and thought the same as you that she must have remarried, bit more digging to be done there.
Once again, thank you will be in contact when I have looked these all over.
Cheers

Re 1851 census John Morton & Jane Greg

Post by Jack » Thu Sep 29, 2005 8:03 pm

Hi Margaret,
I've re-edited that 1851 census - again.
I'd originally written Jane GREG, niece, 7yrs, but when i checked the index it said James, so i thought i'd just had one of my regular "senior moments"...
But it was niggling me, so i checked it today; and i was right all along - it IS Jane. :D
Sorrry for the confusion!

Jack

Hello Jack
You gave me some great info on my John Morton and Christina Campbell from the 1841 census, one wee question ? was there addresses for both of these? Do you have access to the early census or do you have to go look up at a LDS office? I was glad to see they are coming online soon with Scotlands people, I didnt realize just how much information I could get from a census and where it could lead me.
All the best
margaret :D
Cheers

Hi Margaret,
The addresses were as Catriona gave earlier for 1841; and the 1851 address is just as New Cathcart.
Villages rarely had numbers as there was no real need for them in a small community.
I don't know if this wee Helen WRIGHT in 1841 is related to your MORTONs at all, and that it's just pure coincidence she's working beside a Margaret MORTON in 1851.
IGI has an 1835 Neilston born Helen, but on the face of it i can't see any connection.
The only Margaret MORTON i can see of the right age in 1841 is the 15yr old with the other MORTON family [at Cartside of Dripp], and the 1851 census for them shows that all the children were born Cathcart, LKS, and not Neilston, RFW - where most of yours were were born.
Seems that the lands of Cartside Farm was in the Lanarkshire part of Cathcart Parish [though most of the Parish was in Renfrewshire].
So another mystery name for you!

Regarding access to earlier censuses; i'm lucky in that The Mitchell Library in Glasgow is only half an hour away on the bus - it's an excellent place for west of Scotland material, and i notice they are adding OPRs & censuses of many adjoining counties outside the area as an ongoing project.

Jack
ps - re the other MORTON family who were farmers at Cartside of Dripp.
Hubby is Robert MORTON b ~1795 Avondale, LKS
Wife is Janet BROWNING b ~1800 East Kilbride, LKS
At least 10 children; all as b Cathcart, LKS
